Change the display text in lookup

I have a custom entity that I use within the Opportunity and Lead entities as a lookup to the data within the custom entity. When I choose the item from the lookup, the primary key is always displayed, I want to display another field value, how can I do this?

You can also refer this, although this is for older version but should help you to implement your requirement.
