  • I've uploaded a file - mmoaa.zip - to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive
    Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract
Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)
Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'
    Pick that
You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
    At the prompt type
    DIR C:\mmoaa
hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try
    DIR D:\mmoaa
    or
    DIR E:\mmoaa

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

    XCOPY <drive>:\mmoaa  <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

    (e.g. XCOPY P:\wfire P:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h )

run the command (it should take almost no time)and when the prompt returns, type
    EXIT
and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt
then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your SkyDrive Public folder, and post a new link

Also run a new MGADiag report, and post the result.

  • Please first try recreating Licensing Store.

    Recreate the Licensing Store

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-Click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator - accept the UAC prompt

Run the following commands in the Command Prompt window, using the Enter key at the end of each

    net stop sppsvc

(wait until the service has stopped before entering the following lines)

    CD %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform

    REN tokens.dat tokens.bar

    net start sppsvc

    slui.exe

After a couple of seconds the Windows Activation dialog will appear.

You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key, or Activation may occur automatically.

If you are asked for your Key, use the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case

Reboot and Post back with a new MGADiag report

  • Followed instructions as provided...

At activation step typed in key from tag on computer - tried twice (failed both times) as follows:

    1) error code 0xC004F050 reports that product key is invalid (I confirmed was correct)

    2) Will not work with this edition of windows 7

    Rebooted...

Oddly now MGADiag runs, but when I select copy I get an error message "failed to create output files, hr = 0x80070002" it does still allow me to paste...

Prior to doing these steps, this morning there was a message in bottom right hand corner of screen indicating this was not a genuine copy of windows - that message is now gone.

Note that the windows product key in 3rd detail line below (" *****-*****-QCPVQ-KHRB8-RMV82") does not match the tag on computer

Note also that given strange behavior of MGADiag downloaded and ran copy of Malwarebytes but it did not find any issues during a quick scan.

  • The output error when you click the Copy button is not unusual - and can safely be ignored (it appears to perhaps be the result of a rapid double-click)

Please run the following commands, and post the results.

    DIR C:\Windows\System32\7b*.*  /ah

    ICACLS C:\Windows\System32\7b*.*

  • That all looks normal - usually, the 'Product Key not found' error indicates a problem with one of those files, or the Network Service account.

This seems not to be the case here, so we can either spend a long time hunting for the error, or do a repair install.

See here for instructions for a Repair Install....

  • Noel,

Appreciate your help with this... is there anything else I can try before doing this... everything I have read indicates I need to do a complete backup of all computer including exporting itunes library, photoshop elements, etc, etc before attempting the repair, complicated by fact that what I get from Dell are recovery disks only (return to as delivered state) so I need to download ISO, etc activate via phone, etc (Which I will do if I need to...)

I have run a SFC /SCANNOW and it does identify a few things that it cannot repair - "Cannot repair member file..." type messages... can that help in my situation?

  • We can certainly have a look at the CBS.log file and see if it's worth tackling.

Please upload it to your Skydrive or other favoured fileshare site, and post a link to it - I'll see what I can do with it.

certainly, one of then will lead to a non-genuine notification!

I can't do anything tonight - but I'll post a fix protocol tomorrow (with luck!) - if you haven't heard from me by this time tomorrow, SHOUT at me, please!

  • Looks like that fixed it :)

You shouldn't be seeing the notifications any more.

You can confirm it by validating at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate using Internet Explorer
