I have had a perfectly good valid WinXP running on this computer since 2007 when it was purchased new; I have had to reformat a couple of times through hardware errors etc., but not for quite a while now, and every time have had no problems, using the original hologram OEM CD as supplied by PCSpecialist.co.uk. I have also had automatic updates including WGA etc. without any issues. To my knowledge I have never installed anything other than the original, never set up dual boot etc. etc., and I have never cited this stickered COA product key on any other computer.
I have just updated to Service Pack 3 and am suddenly getting the above message saying there is a mismatch!?!?! I have typed in the product key as stickered to the PC (Q****-*****-X****-*****-9R4QW) and it is not being accepted. I tried another product key from another copy of XP I have but that also didn't work. The idea of having to reformat and or reinstall Windows and all my settings seems crazy when nothing has changed and in addition this would represent a huge inconvenience in time as the PC has over the years become very "personalised".
I'm happy to send in the original CD and a copy of the OEM sticker (or the original, if I can keep a copy), I don't think I have a paper receipt but I am sure I have email confirmation of a quote or an order which I can include (I assume PCSpecialist have this also, I do have the order number which I have used to to get technical support or warranty purposes).
I am mystified as to why upgrading to SP3 would cause such an issue and anxious to avoid reformatting ...

Hello Kalessin,

At the moment your computer has an installation of XP Pro on it that was done with a retail licensed installation disc. If you are trying to enter a product key from an OEM CoA, then you are going to get the "Product Key Not Valid for this system" error because the type of product key has to match the type of media used for the installation.
You might try the Product Key updater utility, which has the ability to convert installations from one type of license to another depending upon the product key used: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=45668
Post back to let us know how you do.

Dear Dan
Thank you for the reply - I tried the Product Key Updater and entered the number stickered to the PC, but the message returned "The Product Key entered is not a valid key for this system. Please check it for typing errors and try again". I retried a few times to ensure I had typed it correctly.
I suppose it's conceivable that I inadvertently loaded another XP CD (I have a number of computers) to reformat a while ago, but I can't see how or why I could have used another product key because surely I would then have problems activating the other PCs or would have had the same problem I'm having now ... I will try the numbers from my other machines but will be surprised if that works!
Can you suggest anything else - can I convert the installation by doing a phone activation?
Thanks in advance for your continued help -
Regards

Hello Kalessin,
The current installation of XP Pro on the computer is a retail license installation. That is why it is rejecting the input of the OEM product key that you are taking from the Certificate of Authenticity.
I was hoping the product key updater could update the installation from retail to OEM (it can convert Volume license installations to OEM), but apparently it is not able to do that.
The only other way to accomplish the task that I know of is to do a repair reinstallation (in place upgrade) using a genuine hologrammed Microsoft systembuilder/OEM CD and the Genuine product key as printed on the CoA.
Here are some resources for learning how to do the repair:
