HOW MUCH SPACE SHOULD WINDOWS TAKE UP ON A 105GB LAPTOP RRS feed

  • Question

  • Discovered by using WinDirStat that WINDOWS is using 25gb on my wife's laptop with system32 taking up 20gb. Is this normal and if not can it be reduced. Frightened to touch any of these operating files.

    Thanks for any advice.

It depends on how old the system is - a system that began life as XP  RTM/gold, and has been updated through SP1, SP2, and SP3 using Windows Updates regularly could well end up with 20GB in the System32 folder (together with its subfolders). Its minimum size, on a fresh install using SP3 is around 600MB.
I wouldn't worry about it, unless you are seeing problems.

However - As Carey says - this is not the best forum for such questions, and you should repost it to the Answers Maintenance  forum here
