Upgraded premium vista OEM to Ultimate vista - ruined validation - HELP! RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have spent 16 hours so far searching for the solution to the problem of running Windows Update.  I have Validated several times, as you can see -- Genuine ... and ACTIVATED at least 3 times -- but now after paying microsoft more money and wasting more time....

    I need a solution.

Microsoft GURUS - you wrote it, you damaged it, YOU FIX IT!

I would recommend that you start from scratch and restore your Dell computer to its original Windows Vista operating system using Dell's rcommended recovery procedure, then upgrade again to Windows Vista Ultimate.

  • Same problem I have had for two months with my new HP computer with Vista Home Edition.  I purchased a Vista Ultimate Upgrade from Staples for $259,  A simple, traditional upgrade DOES NOT WORK. I like the originator of the thread above, had exhausted every effort described and instructed by Microsoft to accomplish a simple install.  I, like the originator of this thread, have spent countless hours attempting to upgrade our NEW computers only to be kicked out - after about an hour's trail -  with "upgrade unsuccessful, you will be returned to your previous OS momentarily".

I actually managed to upgrade to Ultimate by performing a 'clean install' only to discover after a month that I was operating my new software under on an apparent 'trail basis'. Upon the end of the 'trail' I was sumarily locked out of my computer entirely because the Product Key I PAID $259 FOR WAS DEEMED INVALID.  I am currently operating under a SECOND TRAIL PERIOD with the instructions from Microsoft (see above) to recover my HP to its original, out-of-box configuration and then perform the Upgrade AGAIN!

All WE need is a valid Product Key. I have already provided proof to Microsoft that my Vista Ultimate Upgrade disk is valid (Product Key plus Serial Number on disk).   Why can Microsoft NOT simply provide its customers with the product Key required to activate the software WE PAID FOR without having to re-invent the wheel?

Moderator - telling the above poster to 'start from scratch and to restore your Dell computer' DOES NOT SOLVE OUR PROBLEM!  Are you authorize to provide an R/A?

  • Hi Scooter,

Your issue is not the same as the origanal poster's issue. You do have a Valid Product Key. I am unsure if you saw my reply in your last forum thread (http://forums.microsoft.com/genuine/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2773790&SiteID=25) but have you tried the Change Product key steps I provided? or, more importently, the suggestion that my Devs provided...specificly:

I have talked with my Dev team and if Vista is not allowing you to Change your Product Key to the Vista Ultimate Upgrade key, they say there may be an issue that (for some reason) your Vista will only allow the Upgrade key to be use during an actual upgrade (not a clean install). This, of course, is not the way it should work, but they do say it is a possibility.

So they suggest that you try upgrading again, but not in the way Tech Support suggested. What we want you to try is to upgrade to Vista Ultimate from your current install of Vista Ultimate and during this "re-upgrade" Vista will ask for a product key. Enter the Product Key from your Vista Upgrade box.  Vista should successfully upgrade using your Vista Ultimate Upgrade key and then all you need to do is Activate either over the Internet or by Phone (whichever works).

    Thank you,

P.S. As for the Original Poster's issue, I agree with Carey. Using the Restore Windows process, to bring Vista back to how it was from the factory, is the only way I know of to correct the files corruption seen in your Diagnostic Report.
