N/AHi
I understand from reading other posts that the above product key is blocked, but that key does not match the product key I have on my PC. I have had the same key running on this PC for 5 years with no problems. The sticker and the disk says I have Windows XP Home Edition but when I go to properties on my computer it says I am running a Professional version. I don't understand how this could have happened.
I just want to know if I can do anything before shelling out £95.
thanks

Morning Sarah,
The first thing you should do is to back up any and all of your files. The option I prefer is using an external hard drive. Hook up the external drive thru an USB port and move all your pictures, documents, spreadsheets, databases, internet favorites and other files to this drive. Then you may use the WGA KIT disc you receive from Microsoft and perform a complete reinstallation.
Take care,
Stephen

Hello Sarahmw220,
Confirming that the mgadiag is reporting that you have a blocked VLK installation of XP Pro on the computer at the moment.
You did mention that your computer has "a sticker" which I am assuming is a Genuine Certificate of Authenticity, and that this CoA is for XP Home Edition, and that it has what looks to be a genuine Product Key printed on it. And you do say that you have a genuine XP Home CD, which should have "for distribution only with a new PC" in the hologram.
Assuming the above is correct, there is no need to purchase a new license, as it seems that the PC is already licensed to run XP Home. The task at hand is to install XP Home.
Unfortunately, there is no Microsoft-supported method for replacing an installation of XP Pro with XP Home, other than to backup and offload your data, then to do a clean installation using the genuine XP Home CD and Product Key you already have.
May I suggest purchasing an external backup hard disk drive (if you have, say, more than 16 GB of files you want to back up) or for more modest needs, you can buy a reasonably priced 16GB, 8GB, 4GB or smaller "flash" or "thumb" drive. Once you have purchased the drive, connect to the computer, then copy your valuable files (pictures, music, email, documents, personal finance data, Internet Explorer favorites, etc etc) to the external hard disk drive or flash drive. When all done, follow the very good tutorial here to do a clean installation of XP: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html
Just as an FYI, you do have the option to purchase the new XP Pro license and try to use the Product Key Updater Utility to "genuine-ize" the current installation, which if it works eliminates the need to backup and then cleanly install Windows. However, there is always a chance of data loss when making such radical changes to your installation of Windows, so in either case it is advisable to backup your files!

Hey Sarah,
You are very welcome :-). There are several strategies one may use for backing up their data. First and foremost is always maintain good file structure so your information isn't scatter amuck on the hard drive. Trying to ensure all of your vital information is backed up will become much harder almost like chasing a needle in a haystack. Here is one idea. Create one top level folder such as calling it Sarah :-). Inside of Sarah create several folders such as Music, Bills "inside bills break out one folder for each bill", pictures, IE Favorites and so forth. This way when you need to back up all you have to do is grab the Sarah Folder and copy then paste it to your external drive. Also you can back up using DVD Burner as well so that way you have dual protection. How you backup data depends on how important and critical it is.
Glad we could help :-)
Stephen

Hi again guys
I am sorry to be such a pain but I have another question I hope you don't mind.
Today I bought an external hard drive (Buffalo Drive Station, External USB 2.0 Hard Drive) and I have backed up my files using Memeo AutoBackup. My question is (and it may sound stupid) now that my information is backed up when I put my XP disc and start a fresh, will I just have to put the USB into my PC and it will automatically restore all my backed up data. I think I am just panicing before I actually restore my PC.
thanks

Sarah,
First make sure your external hard drive is NOT connected to your computer when you begin to re-install Windows. You may accidentally wipe out the information on the drive. As far as restoring your data from your Buffalo Drive Station I am not sure about how that particular model works. You should be able to simply hook up the drive via the USB port and then open MY Computer. Next you should be able to see this drive after it automatically installs the drivers. Then you should be able to copy your files off this drive and move them to your computer hard drive. Should you have further questions please visit their forums or better yet call their tech support :-).
Take care Sarah and hopefully this additional information will point you in the right direction for resolution.
best regards,
Stephen
