• My son gave me a computer some 8-10 years ago that runs Vista Premium. Trying to upgrade to Windows 7 or 8.1 then to 10. I evidently never registered it on my MS account, so the free upgrade is not available to me for this computer. I own several MS Windows OS and products. My son has moved 2x and been deployed to Afghanistan since he gave me the computer. ..does not have any idea where code is. Please help?

  • When did the upgrade from 8.1 to 10 happen? The free upgrades finished in the summer of 2016.

Has it ever ran Windows 10 and been activated?

Any hardware mothered or similar changes since installing Windows 10?

  • Hi,

So was your current system is Windows 10?

How did you upgrade to Windows 10? If didn't upgrade to Windows 10 free, you should have Windows 10 retail key.

Just activate it again from your product key:

    1. Right click This PC, select Properties.

    2. Under Windows activation, click Activate Windows link to follow the wizard to finish the activation.

If it cannot activate, you could call micrsoft service center to actvate by phone.
