Hi
I have Windows 7 Home professional since 2010-Dec and has all along been going fine, yesterday got a message saying it is not genuine and needs activation. Here are the details that other forums have been asked to provide. Would be grateful for help

The problem arose because the System32 files had been made read-only - do NOT set them back that way!
Sometimes this occurs because of ill-advised users thinking it's a good idea, possibly becuase of something they read in an out-of-date web article somewhere.
Soetimes it can be the result of running very badly-designed software.
Sometimes it's the result of malware.
Almost no files need to be marked as 'read-only' - it prevents all changes required for installation of updates, and prevents the system updating the licensing data on each boot (which then prevents the Software Protection Service starting - resulting in the non-genuine notification)

This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers -
Installing the Intel Rapid Storage Drivers

Once complete, please reboot twice, then post another MGADiag report.

It looks as if you may have a number of problems, so let's see if we can identify them all at once....
There is a problem
with your Software Protection Service - something is preventing it from
starting on demand the way it should.Please use the
following in an attempt to isolate the cause.Click on Start
in the Search box,
typeSERVICES.MSC
and hit the Enter
key - accept the UAC prompt if you get one.Look in the console
for the Software Protection service, right-click on it and select Properties.make sure that the
Startup Type is set to Automatic (Delayed Start), and click Apply.Try starting the
service now - do you get an error message? Does it start? does it almost
immediately stop again?Post back with your
results, and a new MGADiag report.If it doesn't start,
then please do the following...Please open an

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the CP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Windows, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

To correct this:-
Open Windows
Explorer (Computer)Navigate to the C:\Windows folder
Find the System32 sub-folder and right-click on it
select Properties
Clear the 'blob'
from the 'Read-only (Only applies to files in folder)' box by clicking on it
until it's plain white.Click on Apply.
Make sure that the
radio button for 'Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files' is set,
and click OK.Accept the
Administrator prompt. After a couple of seconds, you'll be told there is an
error - click on the 'Ignore all' button.Wait for it to finish - it could take a couple
of minutes.OK out, and exit
Windows Explorer.Reboot twice

Thanks Noel! Looks like it is working and it was able to get all pending updates.
To my curiosity confirm is all we did was to make the systesm32 folder readable by unchecking the read only blob ?
DO I need it to put it back to read only again? can you pls explain the soln we did.

The problem arose because the System32 files had been made read-only - do NOT set them back that way!
Sometimes this occurs because of ill-advised users thinking it's a good idea, possibly becuase of something they read in an out-of-date web article somewhere.
Soetimes it can be the result of running very badly-designed software.
Sometimes it's the result of malware.
Almost no files need to be marked as 'read-only' - it prevents all changes required for installation of updates, and prevents the system updating the licensing data on each boot (which then prevents the Software Protection Service starting - resulting in the non-genuine notification)
