Windows not genuine message after installing Microsoft Security Essentials

Question
-
After installing Microsoft Security Essentials I was falsely alerted that Windows was not genuine. I have had my computer for over 4 years and have never had this happen before. After uninstalling Microsoft Security Essentials I still get messages that windows is not genuine and my desktop background has been changed to black. When I try to validate windows, I get the message "Windows validation was interrupted. The validation service is unable to determine whether Windows in genuine." This appears when using internet explorer and chrome.
Here is my Diagnostic:

I'm seeing this error a lot in logs related to WGA at the moment....

It appears related to the Windows Driver Foundation update.
I have no idea how relevant it actually is to the problems you're seeing.
Please try recreating the Licensing Store.
Recreate the Licensing Store with the correct data.
1) Open an Internet Browser window.
2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
3) Find the file CMD.exe
4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
5) Type: net stop slsvc (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
9) Type: net start slsvc
10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
11) Restart your computer twice.
You may be asked to enter your COA Key and/or Activate. – if asked for the Key, use the one on your COA sticker on the machine’s case (you may need to activate by telephone).
Once complete, run another MGADiag report and post back with the results.

Please open an Elevated Command Prompt window, and run the following command
CSCRIPT SLMGR.VBS /DLV
post the results.
You may get a popup as well - please copy the content to your response..
Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

Very odd - this almost certainly means that there is registry corruption.
Please download and save the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
(you'll need to look in the details for Method 2)
Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.
The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file
Then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your SkyDrive Public folder so I can take a look - post a link in your reply.

That didn't find anything - but it took an hour not to do it :)
Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.
At the Command prompt, type
CHKDSK C: /R
and hit the Enter key.
You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, press Enter, and then reboot.
The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!
After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -
then run the SFC.
SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.
At the Command prompt, type
SFC /SCANNOW
and hit the Enter key
Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.
Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and upload it to your SkyDrive Public folder (http://skydrive.live.com ) and post a link to it so that I can take a look.
Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.

You may as well - you can't be any worse off :(
You may have to cancel out if it brings up the Key entry demand.

I used Belarc Adivisor to find my activation key, then verified windows in my browser and everything seems to be working fine now.
Thanks for your help!

What were your earlier Anti-Virus installations? (ALL of them please!) - residues left by AV's can interfere significantly later, and we'll need to run the manufacturer's removal tools.

I previously had AVG as an antivirus, then I switched to Microsoft Security Essentials which I am using now.
I think I used Windows Live OneCare a while back. I don't remember having any other Anti-Virus programs.

Most HP's of that era came with either Norton or McAfee pre-installed - possibly it will be a good idea to run the removal tools for all of them... (One-Care doesn't need one that I know of)
Start with the latest....
Download the AVG
Remover from herehttp://www.avg.com/us-en/utilities
Follow the
instructions for running it, and then reboot the machine (whether it asks for
it or not, and whether the program rebooted already or not).
Download the McAfee removal tool from:
http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe
Click Save, and save the file to a folder on your computer.
Navigate to the folder where you saved the file.
right-click on MCPR.exe and select 'Run as Administrator' to run the removal tool.
when complete, reboot.
Download the Norton Removal Tool from here https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?lg=english&ct=united+states&docid=20080710133834EN&product=home&version=1&pvid=f-home
Close all other programs, then run the tool. When it's complete, reboot the machine whether it asks for it or not.
After the reboot, open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command
NETSH WINSOCK RESET
You'll be advised to reboot - do so.
...and hopefully everything will (still) work properly :)

I am now getting a pop-up that is saying "The Windows Vista Home Premium product key you typed is invalid for activation".
I clicked on "Type a different product key", then used a Windows Product key finder exe. that I found online.
I am then shown that there was a "Windows Activation Error" and the Error Code 0C004F063. The description of the Error says "The Software Licensing Service reported that the computer BIOS is missing a required license."
Hope you can help.

At least it's now giving a meaningful error code :)
Unfortunately, the code is not a good one for you, being that it tells us that the OS is missing the required licenses to activate using the BIOS SLIC table.
This means that your only option to get the system legally activated is going to be using the manufacturer's Recovery media to reinstall the system (unless you find you can read the COA sticker).
Using the media will wipe the drive. :(
