Cannot open Microsoft Money 2007 program RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have transferred my money program from a previous money file that was run on Vista on another laptop and now am trying to open my money file which was backed up on a memory stick and shows up on my new Dell computer, which runs Windows 7 (64 bit).  It will not allow me to open it----I went to Microsoft money site and tried to download another copy of Money 2007 and I did same but it keeps limiting my ability to use it because it states "I have downloaded too many times".  I am going to get a different program to use with my bank and investment records but I have data on this backed up file which I want to transfer to a new program--but I can't open the money file.  What do I need to do to get this file to open.

  • I suggest that you download Money Plus Deluxe Sunset installation program, and install. That will be able to open your Money 2007 file and to do the many things that do not use Microsoft servers. http://www.microsoft.com/money/faq.mspx has various info for you.

There are ways to download data into Money that do not use the Microsoft servers. Most notable is the PocketSense scripts. They will get quote information from Yahoo for whatever stocks and funds you select. It will also download OFX files into your computer that get fed into Microsoft Money. The brokers and credit cards mostly have these OFX servers that get used. For banks that do not have OFX servers, many offer the ability to download an OFX or QIF file from their website. This makes for a very usable setup. It has the advantage of using a familiar interface, making sure that it does not feed your bank login data to third parties, and it has no expiration or costs. But still, many things that depended on the Microsoft servers will not be there. If you search for 'pocketsense' in this forum using the search box, you will find some threads that discuss PocketSense.

For a full experience, Quicken has an easy conversion of Money files to Quicken. This includes convienient access where you give Quicken your login credentials to banks etc, and it will get the info. This is similar to the banks where Money used Yodlee to access the data for those FIs that did not offer OFX servers. The Quicken converter requires a working Money 2007 or Money Plus (including Sunset) to perform the conversion. It is a very good conversion in most cases.

You might try both in parallel for a while.
