How do I open my Money 2005 file in my new machine running windows 8.1. The old machine used Vista RRS feed

  • Question

  • I had been using Money 2005 in Vista, and the data file is called Msmoney.bak, and Msmoney.m12. After loading the program on the new machine using Windows 8.1, neither file will opn. Money tells me "cannot locate the file...or cannot open it"  I know the files are there; I have copied them into Documents, C:/, and to a flash drive, but the program will not open them from any location.  Can anybody tell me how to get the file open?

  • If you installed Money 2005 from a CD, that is likely the problem.  Money 2005 needs an online update that is no longer available.

Go to the second "sticky" post in this forum:

    http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/479281b2-90f9-42ca-85f7-644fc6e1e5c3/download-microsoft-money-installation-files-solve-activation-and-some-other-errors?forum=money

and download the version of Money that is appropriate for your region.  If you are in the UK that will be the 2005 Money version in that post.  It has the required update.  Be sure to uninstall your current Money 2005 before you install the downloaded program.

Let us know if this works for you.

  • Do not use your old disk. Instead get the install file for your country via the second thread in this forum.

The *.m12 file would have been a copy of your Money 2004 at the time you converted to Money 2005. A *.mbf file would be a Money backup file. The regular data file would be *.mny.

Copy the data and backup files to other media, in case something goes wrong.
