Someone has invited me to his shared folder. How do I sync that folder to one in my computer RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I am using Live Mesh for some time now and have been sharing 2 folders with friends.

Today, another friend has invited me to share a folder with him. I can currently view my friend's shared folder in the web browser. But I also want to have the contents automatically synchronized with an folder in my computer.

Please let me know how to to this.

    Thanks a lot

    Hi,

    My answers:

Is your local computer listed as a device in that dialog box?

    Ans: Yes

What I'm hoping is that you'll be able to change the sync setting for that folder through the "Change sync settings" dialog box to have it sync with your local device.  Please let me know how it goes.

Ans: The sync setting for the local computer as well as for the Live Desktop is set at "When files are added or modified". It has been like this from the begining.

    Thanks

    Hi,

Wow.  Now I'm really confused!  Did you click "Okay" or "Cancel" from that screen (the "Change sync settings" window)?  If you clicked "Okay", then the folder should be syncing with your computer, i.e., you ought to see the folder on your local device somewhere.  Is it possible that the folder was synced to a different location than you intended when you first accepted the invitation?  Have you tried searching your computer for that folder (or files in that folder)?  From everything you've described, that folder ought to already be syncing to your local device, so if you cannot find it then there is something very, very strange going on.

Thus, if you search your computer and can find no trace of that folder or any of the files in it, the next step is to submit a bug (instructions) and we'll see if our devs and testers can figure out what's going on here.  After you have submitted your bug, please post the Connect Feedback ID here so that I can track it internally - and we'll try to get to the bottom of this.

    Thanks,

    Ben.

  • Did your friend share the folder with the same LiveID you use for your Live Mesh account? As far as I know, you should see the shared folder on the Live Desktop along with your other Live Mesh folders and all of them would be offered to you as available for synchronizing locally to devices in your Live Mesh. If your friend only granted you rights to view the files in the Mesh, and not contribute, perhaps that is why it does not sync locally. I don't have any folders in my Live Mesh that belong to others. I have one folder that I am the owner of that I shared with others back when Live Mesh was first released, but those users have since unsubscribed from the folder.

I suspect that the issue would be the rights that were granted when the folder was shared. Someone should be along to confirm this.

  • Thank you for your reply.

Yes, you are right. For all earlier cases, I always could see the folders in my Live Desktop and I could sync them.

But this time, I am not sure why the shared folder is not being offered for synchronization. I have checked the rights from the web browser and I am a contributor.

I have been at it for the last 5 hrs but unable to figure out anything.

    Thanks again

  •  Well, as a contributor, I'd expect it to be offered. Since I don't have any folders shared with me, I can't tell you if you should be able to check the properties of the folder on the Live Desktop and select if you wish to only synchronize with the Live Desktop or also select the devices you wish to sync with.

Hang in there and we should hear from someone who actually knows how this is supposed to work eventually!

  • Hi,

You should be able to sync the folder locally on any device you've added to your mesh - in fact, as soon as you accepted the invitation to the folder, a Live Mesh shortcut folder icon should have appeared on your local desktop (i.e., on the computer's desktop, not the Live Desktop in the browser).  You should then be able to double-click that shortcut and start the sync process.  If you wouldn't mind, could you describe your scenario in more detail?  I'm assuming that you have Live Mesh installed on the computer in question, and that you are not seeing a shortcut to your friend's folder on your desktop - is that correct?  Are there any other computers in your mesh (and if so, are you having the same problem on those computers)?  Since you can see the folder on your Live Desktop, what happens if you right-click that folder and select "Change sync settings"?  Do you get the synchronization window?  Does the computer that you'd like to sync the folder to appear in that window?  If so, what synchronization options are present (I would imagine they're all greyed out)?

Depending upon your answers, we may ask you to submit a bug. ;)

    Thanks,

    Ben.

  • Hi Ben,

    Here are my answers:

You should be able to sync the folder locally on any device you've added to your mesh - in fact, as soon as you accepted the invitation to the folder, a Live Mesh shortcut folder icon should have appeared on your local desktop (i.e., on the computer's desktop, not the Live Desktop in the browser).  You should then be able to double-click that shortcut and start the sync process.

Ans: This icon never appeared on my Desktop (the computer's desktop).

When LM is running, 'My Computer' shows a blue folder called 'Live Mesh Folders'. Earlier, whenever someone invited me to share a folder, that shared folder used to appear inside the 'Live Mesh Folders'. All I had to do then was to right cllick and slelect 'Sync with this computer'.

If you wouldn't mind, could you describe your scenario in more detail?  I'm assuming that you have Live Mesh installed on the computer in question, and that you are not seeing a shortcut to your friend's folder on your desktop - is that correct?

    Ans: Correct

Are there any other computers in your mesh (and if so, are you having the same problem on those computers)?

Ans: I share/sync files with 2 more friends. Everything seems to be fine there. I have invited another friend today to test this issue, and files synced okay. But in this case I had sent the invitation to my friend #3.

Since you can see the folder on your Live Desktop, what happens if you right-click that folder and select "Change sync settings"?

Ans:  I get a dialog box, which lets me choose how to sync the folder

Do you get the synchronization window?  Does the computer that you'd like to sync the folder to appear in that window?  If so, what synchronization options are present (I would imagine they're all greyed out)?

Ans: When I double click on the Folder icon in Live Desktop, the folder contents appear. I am also able to select the files in that folder and do a 'Save as' to my computer. I can also create folders and upload files.

I have also tried to delete the shared folder. In the delete confirmation dialog box, my permission is shown as a 'contributor'.

Please let  me know if any of my answers are not clear.

     Thanks a lot

    Hi,

You say that you do get a dialog box, which lets you choose how to sync the folder.  Is your local computer listed as a device in that dialog box?  My question about the synchronization window was about that dialog box (not what happens when you double-click the folder) - so what I'm wondering is if your device shows up in the dialog box after right-clicking and selecting "Change sync settings"?  Since the folder appears on you Live Desktop, it's quite strange that it's not showing up (as a shortcut folder) on your local device.  What I'm hoping is that you'll be able to change the sync setting for that folder through the "Change sync settings" dialog box to have it sync with your local device.  Please let me know how it goes.

    Thanks,

    Ben.

  • Thanks Ben,

I will see if the files are getting synced somewhere else. Incase I don't find them, I will ask my friend to send me another invitation to a fresh shared folder.

Still if nothing works, I will post a bug and post the ID here.

Thanks a lot for your help
