understanding the new Windows Live Messenger

  I am trying to find out what happened to the section in Windows Live where I could store information re: my contacts.  There used to be a "edit contact" link which led to all the information - including notes - that you had on a contact. (email address, etc.) Now when I right click on a contact in my list and then click on the edit contact, I'm taken to a web page.  I used to have all sorts of notes re: contacts including when and what we discussed etc.  What happened to all of this?  Can't I get the "old" messenger back?  I don't like the so-called improvements.
