Volume Shadow Copy-service won't start RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, I want to make a restore point, but it gives an error (0x81000202). I checked the services, and I can't get the Volume Shadow Copy-Service to start. I know the service worked in the past, but recently, I had problems with the Software Licensing Service, but that is resolved with the "Fix for 'Software Licensing service Has Stopped' on some Vista 64bit systems". And before someone asks me, yes, I have CCleaner and Eusing Free Registry Cleaner.

The error message gives an error 3 and says that the path is missing.

  • Hello Valandil01,

This forum is for the support of Activation and Validation issues.  Unfortunatly, the Volume Shadow Copy-Service is outside my area of knowledge. I recommend posting your question in one of the Vista Answers forums at http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/windowsvista/

That being said, I have seen non-genuine issues with using some 'free' Registry Cleaners on 64bit versions of Vista. As you have read, the cleaner can delete the entery that tells vista where the slsvc.exe file is located (that's the file that controls the Software Licensing Service). We have also found that even after using the a 'Restore from Backup' functionality in the Registry Cleaner, the issue is still Not corrected (the restore is incomplete).  It is altogeather possible that the cleaner could have the same effect on the file that controls the Shadow Copy Service.

Personally (this opinion is not the opinion of Microsoft) I don't see a point in Registry Cleaners. a) I don't trust anything (especally from a company I'v never heard of) mucking around in something as important as the Registry b) you get what you pay for and c) preformance may increase from cleaning the registry, but I can't see how the increase could outweigh the drawbacks of a) and b). And the issues I've seen in this forum only reinforces that opition.

Sorry I couldn't be more help,
    Darin MS
