Can't get email-router to work in CRM 4. RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've spent the past two days trying to get our email router up and running and I'm at a loss what else to do. I'm not really finding any answers online. When I go to Load Data, here's the error that pops up every time:

The E-Mail Router Configuration Manager was unable to retrieve user and queue information from the MS Dynamics CRM Server. This may indicate that the MS Dynamics CRM server is busy. Verify that http://*****-crm1/MSCRMServices/2007/AD/CrmDiscoveryService.asmx' is correct. Additionally, this problem can occur is specified access credentials are insufficient. To try again, click Load Data. (You have specified an invalid CRM discovery service URL. You must enter a URL for a CRM server that is running the discovery web service.)

Now, that file path above for the discovery service IS correct. I've checked it a hundred times. If I go directly to that page in my web browser, the page comes up.

I've tried a few things, like using different login credentials (me since I'm a domain admin, the domain admin, and the CRM mailbox user), changing the mail server address to its OWA address, using the IP address of the CRM server instead, etc. I did download and use the IFD tool, which helped me get the Outlook tool installed (the port number from an initial failed installation was listed). Although one weird thing that happens is that if I go to "check DNS" it comes up with "can't find mycompanyllc.mydomain.com". But it should be myCRMserver.mydomain.com, shoudln't it?

Nothing works and I can't get it to work. This is a major hurdle for me, as you can imagine. I need to get this CRM server running full bore by the end of the month.

  • Hi,

Getting the e-mail router configuration just right can be a bit challenging because there are several items you need to check.

Review the post link below and go through the various settings carefully.  If this does not work for you, then please post your settings in the same way you see them posted in the response so we can work to identify the modification needed.

Please post your settings in this format:

Configuration Profiles tab (Incoming profile) (Advanced tab has default settings)

    E-mail server Type: Exchange

    Authentication Type: Windows Authentication

    Location Server: http://mail.companyname.com (OWA)

    Access Credentials: Other specified Specified

    Domain administrator login account

Configuration Profiles tab (Outgoing profile) (Advanced tab has default settings)

    E-mail server Type: SMTP

    Authentication Type: Windows Authentication

    Location Server: exchangeservername

    Access Credentials: Local System Account

    Deployments tab

    MIcrosoft Dynamics CRM server: http://servername:5555/company_name

  • Try using http://*****-crm1/YourOrganizationName without the 'MSCRMServices/2007/AD/CrmDiscoveryService.asmx'  - you can find the organization name in the deployment manager (it's not the 'friendly' name, but rather the organization name - and remember it's case sensitive in this situation.)

Take a look at Larry Lentz's experience with configuring the email router here - he ran into a similar challenge (and lived to blog about it!) : http://ts2blogs.com/blogs/larrylentz/archive/2008/02/16/configuring-crm-4-0-e-mail-router.aspx

and this document "Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4 E-mail Router Configuration Scenarios.docx" - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=8ea05b4e-825a-4db1-ad59-d894aa5ef33e&DisplayLang=en

  • Ah, I think we're making progress. I did that and I'm still getting an error. But the error now is "The request failed with http status 401: Unauthorized."

I used both my login and domain admin and I get the same error.

  • Where are you getting the error? when you try to load data? - Just to ensure we're on the same path - the user (you or the admin account) is a CRM user right? set up with an adminsitrator role in CRM and you've been able to log into CRM without problems?

Also are you hosting CRM yourself? or is at a partner / CRM online?

  • SUCCESS!!!!! Not quite sure how this worked..... I followed your second link which took me to Microsoft's site. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/915827/en-us

I created a new connector on the Exchange server. After I did that, I was reading the documentation on modifying the OUs - and next thing I know, ALL queued email started coming through to my inbox!

The funny thing is, though, the E-mail Router Configuration still wont' work. So, I'm at a loss right now.

Yes, getting the error when trying to Load Data.

Yes, my account is a CRM admin and no problems whatsoever getting into CRM otherwise.

  • Thanks, Donna. I'm going to go back and try this. The funny thing is that I *just* got it working using my credentials all the way through. The problem is that my name is the only one that now shows up in the Users & Queues, instead of all our CRM users.

    EDIT:
I just changed everything to the way you said above. The one hang-up is that I had to use MY credentials in the deployment tab instead of domain admin. Otherwise it doesn't work. Do I need to add the domain admin to the list of users in CRM?

  • Well, it seems I've been abel to get it working correctly! I downloaded and re-read the Examples of how to configure the Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 on-premise E-mail Router in different deployment scenarios" document and finally understood the difference betwen the e-mail router and Outlook for CRM. We're going to use both, so the users will be more likely to adopt the program, but use the router for outgoing mail so people don't have to be online and have Outlook opened to allow queued items to be sent. Thanks for all the suggestions! I learned a lot.

  • I am unable to get this to work. I have installed the Email Router on the same server as my CRM. When I attempt to Load Data I get the following message: "The Email Router Configuration Manager was unable to retrieve user & queue information...etc...(The request failed with HTTP status 401: Unauthorized)".

Here are the settings I am using:

    Outbound Profile
    SMTP
    Authentication type: Windows Authentication
    Server: server.company.com
    Access Credentials: Local System Account

    Inbound Profile
    Server Type: Exchange
    Authentication: Windows Authentication
    Location: https://mail.company.com
    Access Credentials: Other (domain.com\fowardMBuseracct)

    Deployment
    My Company
    CRM Server: http://servername:5555/CRM
    Access Credentials: Local System Account
    No Incoming Profile selected

Server is Win 2003 64bit; Exchange is 2007. I have tried replacing Local System Account with my account with same results.

Any help would be appreciated. I am less concerned with Incoming email than Outgoing email - I need Outgoing working ASAP.

    Thanks.

  • Your issue may be associated with the Access Credentials.  Try using Domain Admin instead of Local System.  Since the E-mail Router is communicating with several machines, you need to really take the time to review the implementation guide to ensure you have all the settings correct.

Here is a link if you need it:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=e1358499-3fdb-45b8-adf0-7585f758277e&displaylang=en

Review the following post and carefully make adjustments and test.

    http://social.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/crmdeployment/thread/f0611864-2fd3-4bbe-9c51-c79913d3f10d/

Also, try starting the E-mail Router Service with a Domain Login to see if that helps.

  • Donna:

This helps me as well. I was getting the same 401 unauthorized error message few mins before I read this post and applied it. Thanks for your help.

However, I have one problem at this point. I have configured my email router and the SMTP test was successful, but when I try to send an email message through CRM, It does not send the message and a message display at the top of email (in activities) "The Message delivery failed. It must be resubmitted for any further processing". Do you have any idea why it is not going through. However, when I clicked test configuration button at Email Router, there were no error messages.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

  • Ok, so the e-mails are getting created.  There could be several reasons for the failure so lets focus on the Router configuration for now to ensure it is running as expected.

Open the Router Configuration Manager and ensure all of the following are testing successfully.

Go to the tab Users, Queues, Forward Mailbox
    Load Data
    Test Access on the Users
Go to the Forward Mailbox tab and Test Access on the Forward Mailbox

Are you creating the e-mail in CRM or using the Outlook Client.  If you are using the Outlook Client, do you have the Outlook Client settings correct in the CRM Outlook Client options?

    Incoming = Forward Mailbox
    Outgoing = E-mail Router
