Computer Freezes with mapped drives RRS feed

  • Question

  • I work IT so this is pretty shameful but whenever a program like UltraEdit, Github, Microsoft products, etc. try to access my home folder, everything freezes. I can open up my file explorer and my mapped home drive no longer has an estimation of my free space, and when I try to enter it the file explorer freezes. During this time programs that are in sync with my home folder are completely frozen, my even my desktop turns purple and goes blank, but other programs like chrome are completely fine. The same is happening to my co worker. We have discovered it is not our computer because it happens on different computers and it is not the switch because we are on different switches. I'm on Windows 8 with an Optiplex 990.

I do not know the right place to put this question because I honestly do not know what is wrong. Help!!

  • Hi Doran,

first thing to try would be check, if there are more current updates for the network card on the server and the clients and apply those.

Second: Is there anything running on the server, which is causing a high load on network or disk subsystem at that time (i.e. Volume Shadow Copies or DFS-R replication)? If so try to schedule them not to run during prime business hours.

Is there anything visible in the event logs of the server? Might also be interesting to use resource monitor on the server (we had a Dell Server acting in a very similar way, even locally on the server the drive with the shared folder rendered unusable and did not show the disk fill bar anymore)  and the only solution was finally to disable DFS-R for the data shares during daytime).

Are network drives excluded from scans with virus scanner?

Would a connection between two client PCs remain stable?

    Best greetings from Germany

  • My network cards are all up to date. And it is not the server because no one else has this issue besides myself and one co-worker of mine. Other people in the same room, same switch and down the hall do not have this problem. The event viewer just tells me that the applications like windows explorer and ultraedit are hanging, but that's a biproduct of the real problem which is the programs try to access my home folder and that takes forever causing the hang. And yeah, I can connect to other PC's on the network and there are no issues with that. Its literally only when other things try to use my home folder like ultraEdit, word, excel, downloading files into my home folder etc.

    Thanks for the suggestions those,

  • What happens, if you take your PC and connect it on a desk/network interface, which has no issues for now?

Are other users logged in to your PC face the same problem?
