  • The first thing to try is changing your password at http://account.live.com if your current password is longer than 8 characters.

    Hopefully that does it.

    If not, try the following:

    1. Set Internet Explorer to be your default browser, if it isn't already, via Program Access and Defaults from Control Panel.

    2. Delete cookies and temporary Internet Files from within IE.

    3. On the IE connections tab, make sure "automatically detect" is not selected for the LAN settings.

    4. Close IE.

    5. Open OneCare and proceed with activation.

  • At what point are you receiving the error message? What exactly does the message state? Is it reporting that it can't log you in or that it can't achieve a connection to the Internet?

I can't tell you what your LiveID is, but if you created it and can sign in with it at http://account.live.com that would be a valid LiveID.

I think that you may want to see this post for the KB article to troubleshoot install problems - http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsOneCare/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1588602&SiteID=2

  • I open up OneCare then at the top right it says Subsribe. I click it and it asks if I have an ID. I made my account yesterday so I click yes. Then it says sign in. I post my windows live ID and password and this is the message, "Signing in was unsuccessful because of an error. Please make sure that you are connected to the Internet and try again later. If the problem persists, contact support." then has this error code: 800401f3.

  • Can you log in with that LiveID at http://account.live.com?

Is the password simple or complex? (symbols, numbers, mix of lower/uppercase and longer than 8 character would be comlex)

  • I realize that there is one basic question I failed to ask. You say you have a new subscription. Does that mean you purchased a retail box copy and you are now trying to activate with the product key, but you find that you are unable to log in during the activation/subscription process from clicking the link in OneCare?

  • No i bought it over internet. no product key. Just can't log in to onecare with my name to activate it.

  • So, you actually began activation, provided payment information, but activation never completed. Then you tried to activate again, using the same LiveID you used the first time?

And when you try to sign in on all of the subsequent attempts, the error you receive is that it is unable to log you in and check your Internet connection of password?

This is a long shot, but see this post http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsOneCare/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1516793&SiteID=2

Is the LiveID you are using also a Hotmail account that you check for email at www.hotmail.com? And what country are you in?

    Nelson,

    Try the following:

    1. Set Internet Explorer to be your default browser, if it isn't already, via Program Access and Defaults from Control Panel.

    2. Open IE and in Tools/Internet Options, verify that your language setting is correct for your country. (English - Canada)

If it is not, click "Add" to select your language and country combination from the list.

Make that selection the default. It should appear at the top of the list.

Remove or demote other entries that are not appropriate for your country.

    3. Delete cookies and temporary Internet Files from within IE.

    4. On the IE connections tab, make sure "automatically detect" is not selected for the LAN settings.

    5. Close IE.

    6. Open OneCare and proceed with activation.

If the above still fails to bring you to the form for payment in your (supported) country, please contact support.
