MS Office product key RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have been having problems trying to validate my MS Office. The product key on the back of my laptop has smudged slightly on the edges so that I can't read 3 or 4 of the characters. Is there anything I can do to find it elsewhere?

  • Dan at IT Associates,

    That is a good question.

The Office Status: 102 indicates that it is a trial version (this is the overall code)

Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 - 100 Genuine just indicates that the trial version is genuine.

  • Computer manufacturers often install a trial version of Microsoft Office.  If you are getting a prompt to type in a Product Key when opening a Microsoft Office program, it is likely the trial period is over and you'll need to purchase a license (product key) for Microsoft Office.

The product key affixed to your computer is for Windows Vista (the operating system) and not for Microsoft Office.  Please review the following:

  • When I checked to determine if I had a trial version or not, I found that I did not. In addition, the product key that I found was located in a box that had the Microsoft logo and a sort of stamp of authenticity. I don't know if that means anything.

Also, I remember the application doing this from the first time i opened it, I just did not know what it was and could not find the key.

    Thank you for the information.

I understand the inconvenience you are currently experiencing and would like to provide you with some self-help options we have made available for our customers. Please follow the steps outlined below as it could either resolve your issue or, if need be, provide us with additional information to determine the cause of this issue.

    1.      Ensure you log onto the computer experiencing the issue with “Administrator” rights.

    2.      Next we would like to confirm that you are running the most current version of the Genuine Advantage control on your computer. Please follow the below link and choose the “Validate Office” option.

    http://www.microsoft.com/genuine

If the above steps did not resolve your issue lets continue with the steps below.

If you could also please follow the steps outlined below, the diagnostics Web Site will attempt to resolve the validation errors you are experiencing with Office.

    http://www.microsoft.com/Genuine/diag/RunDiags.aspx?displayLang=en

Next follow the on-screen prompts to resolve the issue if any of the checks at the above site fail. If, after attempting to resolve the issue as per the instructions on the above site fails, please refer to the link below and run the MGA Diagnostics tool:

    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

You will be prompted to either “Run” or “Save” the tool. Choose to “Run” the tool and follow the on-screen prompts. You will receive an “Internet Explorer-Security Warning” dialog box for the “Windows Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool”; you must choose to “Run” this tool when prompted.

Once you are presented with the Diagnostics tool choose “Continue” to run the diagnostic report. If the “RESOLVE” button is available after running the diagnostics, please click “RESOLVE” to allow the diagnostic tool to attempt a repair.

    1.      After running the MGA Diagnostic tool, click on the “Windows” tab and then click on “Copy”.

    2.      Please return to this post and “Paste” the results here for additional review.

When analyzing the diagnostic report, we've identified it as being incomplete or invalid and no office products were shown.

It looks like an HP machine.  You can contact HP for the recovery CD's for purchasing non-windows software or at a retailer near you.

  • Lori MS,

Lauren D's mgadiag report does show that she has Office 2007 Home and Student installed and it is showing as "100 Genuine".

But the overall OGA status is 102.  What does 102 mean?

    Thx.

  • Lauren D,

Your mgadiag utility is showing that your 2007 Office Home and Student installation is a Trial Installation.  Office Status=102 means your installation is a Trial.

Please locate Carey's post (2nd one in the thread) and follow his provided links to learn about the trial software and how to convert to Perpetual (aka permanently licensed) software.

Post back to let us know how you made out!
