File Transfer freeze and fail RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am not sure what happened in the last couple weeks but when I try to move a large file to my server it starts off around 15MB and slows down unti lit eventually fails. I installed the latest nic drivers and have chkdsk running, for about 12 hours now.

But I now know it is not a network issue since I shered out a folder on one of my backup drives on the WHS box and I get transfers up around 50MB.

I also tried the transfers with the demigrator service on and off. Any ideas?

  • Could be one of your drives is running in PIO mode. Please checkout this thread and this one and this one.

If your disk controller has dropped back to PIO mode, it's been detecting errors from your disks for a while, and has been stepping back the disk access mode to try to compensate. This usually indicates a problem either with one or more disks attached to the controller, or with the controller itself. After correcting the problem please run chkdsk on all disks in your server

  • Please read my first post and check if one your drives is running in PIO mode. This would explain what you are observing.

  • I fired off the chkdsk script and it ran for almost an entire day before I had to kill it.

After tinkering some more I found out that.

I can read from the drive pool just fine. a 20 gig file copied over in about 15 minutes.

I can write to a backup drive on the WHS box that has been shared out just fine.

I can remote into the server and copy the file from the shared drive to the drive pool just fine.

So the problem is only when I tried to write data from a remote machine into the drive pool.

I'm almost to the point where I will move the data off to a 2tb drive and put that drive in my HTPC. The connector software should have some diagnostics built in.

  • So far so good. I am going to throw some large files at it and see if it is stable. If a drive went into PIO mode does that mean I should look at replacing it? I didn't pay attention to the properties screen to see if I could figure out which drive it was but will a chkdsk run find it?

    Thanks,

    Phil

  • Please run chkdsk on all drives first. This may take a considerable time to finish, especially if there are issue, so please be patient.

It's not necessarily a disk issue, could also be controller, controller driver, cabling, ........Let's just hope it doesn't come back. If it does make sure you have good (new) cables, all connections are OK, get the latest controller (chipset if the controller is on the MB) drivers. Also please read this article, section 8 may be useful for you also.
