Windows 7 Ultimate Suddenly Becomes Non-Valid RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi. Bought a new computer last Christmas and son bought me W7 Ultimate as a present. I think he got the disc + key from the US (I'm in UK), don't think it came from eBay as he didn't have an account at that time. Disc was obviously a copy, but he said it was the key that mattered and it was genuine. Being wary, I downloaded the Genuine Advantage stuff, which verified that all was OK and I relaxed. However, last night, I got a message saying that the Windows 7600 was not genuine and the desktop background went black, although everything still seems to work. I have browsed the forums and as a result, checked my Product ID, which I have found has 066 in it. This appears to be one of the non-genuine ones? I'm not a whizz on computers and have no idea how people get all the data stuff up, but, assuming that I have a duff installation, I was wondering what I can do to sort it out?

    1) Can I purchase just a genuine key and upgrade the dodgy one, or would I have to install the whole lot again?

    2) My son and daughter, who are both at school, use the computer to study quite a lot. Would I be able to get a student licence?

    3) How long will my computer keep going? The bit next to the product ID says 'You must activate now'

    Thanks in advance,

    John

  • Yes, you can change the product key then activate it, however, it can be stubborn. If you try it and it fails please post here and I can give you the manual instructions for removing the old key which will allow the new key to function and activate. But first try changing it through control panel> system proterties>

  • 1) Most likely. Sometimes the keys are a little stubborn to change but if you have problems with the new key post back here. However, the key MUST match the existing version or it will not be accepted.

    2) The only student versions I know of are the MSDNAA Pro Upgrade version, it would require a clean install of the qualifying OS and an upgrade install of the 7-Pro however there are special qualifiers for using the product, you would need to read up on that, it is available from most colleges.

    3) Forever, your computer will not shutdown on you or lock you out. However, if you depend on MSE for virus protection it will not function, certain very useful MS downloads will not be available, your screen will go black once a week and it will basically bug the you know what our of you until you get it fixed.

All of this said, if you want to post the report then we can verify your keys status. But the PID of 066 IS an MSDN key. The only remaining question is did that cause the non-genuine status or was it something else, however unlikely that is.

    Thanks

    Carl

Do you know how I can bring one of the long data reports up on my computer?

    Thanks,

For 2. Go to http://www.software4students.co.uk and register your son or duaghter as a student. You can get an ultimate upgrade for £58 (either download or they post you media). Your son/daughter must be the primary user of the PC to qualify. You can read all the rules/faq when you are there to see if you can qualify (http://www.software4students.co.uk/faq.aspx). You must know if you need 32-bit or 64-bit as only one version/disk is included. I have no idea if you would need to uninstall the old version or not first. If you do, you can double install the new version to do the upgrade (or there is another trick you can do to just install once). As you have a new computer I assume it came with an OS preinstalled. If not you do not qualify for the upgrade. You can also get them office 2010 pro plus (full version, not upgrade) for £39 if they have a use for this (this licence is valid for 2 computers so long as both are for the same student to use). They usually send the disks out within 24 hours but there can be a delay (of up to 30 days?) while checks are made that your child is an actual student (I usually get my disks within a few days).

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
    Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.

You can also paste it into Notepad or Wordpad, or Word (or any other word processor).

  • Hello flakie99,

Microsoft has a Student deal on W7Pro upgrades for less:  http://www.microsoft.com/student/office/en-gb/default.aspx

The site you mentioned is cheaper for Office though.

Thanks Dan. Overall though, ordering Windows 7 Pro from software4students works out cheaper (£0.05) if you want the physical media and also there are other benefits to.

Not a lot but every penny counts ;)

Buying from the Microsoft site requires you to have an .ac.* email address. Buying from software4students does not. Even grandparents can order software for their student grandchildren. No special email address required :)

Also there is no requirement for the student to be in higher education at software4students. The student can be in primary school, aged from 4-5.

Buying Windows 7 direct from Microsoft also does not include the physical media (and delivery of it). It does with software4students.

I also do not think you can order Ultimate from Microsoft?

I think the Office version from software4students also includes a couple of extra applications (infopath and communicator) which are not included when buying direct from Microsoft and again includes physical media (and delivery).

It also gives a small rebate to the students school when ordering via software4students.

  • This IS one of the blocked MSDN keys. Note the following error code. I suggest the WGA kit available as one of the options when you click on the prompt to resolve your issue, you can also find it by going to www.microsoft.com/genuine and attempt to validate, upon failure follow the link to resolve the issue and you should see an option for purchasing a replacement license at a reduced cost.

Do you know if the replacement licence can be keyed straight into my Windows 7 without having to to re-install?

    Thanks again,

Must be a shipping charge that I did not account for  :-)
