XP Validation Issues

Question
-
A few years ago, my Windows laptop had some hardware issues and I was looking to buy a new computer anyway, so I bought a Mac and put the laptop in the closet. Well, I pulled the old laptop down so my son could use it for school, put a new hard drive in it, and installed XP from the disc I received when I bought the computer. I don't have the product key that came with it anymore because I cannot find the case, only the disc. So, I tried the phone activation, gave the talking-computer the ridiculously long installation ID, and it says it's not a valid copy. I don't know what to do.

N/AThe disk you used for the reinstall is from Compaq/HP machine, while this machine is an Acer.If you can read the COA sticker on the Acer’s case, try changing the Key to that one, using the Product Key Update Tool.

Noel,
I feel like a dunce for not realizing that. I have a few different copies of XP that I received with various systems. I somehow overlooked that. Thanks! It worked.

Good Luck.
