  • Question

  • Today I called microsoft (1291042051) as a few days ago I registered for the windows 10 upgrade not I receive an error message that my windows is not genuine- Was told either I have to re install windows clean and backup or lose all my data or can pay for a support contract and a tech can look at it- Surely there must be a third option.

If I go to control panel/system and security/system the windows activation status and product Id are not available using MGA tool I get the data below-- HOWEVER the prodcut key is not the same as the key on the side of the computer- This was a factory install so I am really confused as to what is going on- any help appreciated

  • Still the same - looks like we'll have to use brute force...

Open Regedit and navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_SPLDR Key

Export it to a reg file for safety!

Right-click on the key name, and Select Permissions,

Click on Advanced, then the Owner tab

Make sure that Administrators is the owner, and put a tick in the 'Replace owner...' box at the bottom

    Click OK once

add Administrators to the 'Groups or Usernames' list, and give them Full permissions

    CLICK OK

Now move to the 0000 subkey

    Double-click on the ConfigFlags entry

Change the data value to 400 (make sure that the radio-button is in 'Hexadecimal') and click OK

    Exit Regedit, and reboot.

    Post a new MGADiag report

  • There is a problem with your Software Protection Service - something is preventing it from starting on demand the way it should.

Please use the following in an attempt to isolate the cause.

Click on Start in the Search
    box, type

    SERVICES.MSC

and hit the Enter key - accept the UAC prompt if you get one.

Look in the console for the Software Protection service, right-click on it and select
    Properties.

make sure that the Startup Type is set to Automatic (Delayed Start), and click Apply.

Try starting the service now - do you get an error message? Does it start? does it almost immediately stop again?

Post back with your results, and a new MGADiag report.

If it doesn't start, then please do the following...

Please open an Elevated (Administrator) Command Prompt window and use the following
    commands....

    net start sppsvc

    sc qc sppsvc

    sc queryex sppsvc

    sc qprivs sppsvc

    sc qsidtype sppsvc

    sc sdshow sppsvc

Copy and paste the output to your reply

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)

    1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.

    2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.

    3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

  • Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

     CHKDSK C: /R

    and hit the Enter key.

You will be told that the drive is locked, and the CHKDSK will run at the next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size  of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally  (possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

    SFC /SCANNOW

    and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Upload the CBS.log file (compressed, please!) to your OneDrive or DropBox Public folder, and post a link - also post a new MGADiag report.

I'm not sure exactly what file SPPSVC is saying is missing now :( - but it could be that the permissions on the file are wrong, so let's check that...

Open an Elevated CommandPrompt, and run the following commands.

    ICACLS C:\Windows\System32\sppsvc.exe

    ICACLS C:\Windows\system32\sppuinotify.dll

  • Doh!

I missed the other clue, which tells me the answer...

    Cached Validation Code: N/A, hr = 0xc0000022

What AV is currently installed? What other AV's have EVER been installed? (Have you EVER used Norton software on this machine?)

Please run the following commands, and post the results.

    REG QUERY HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\spldr /S

    REG QUERY HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_SPLDR /S

    REG QUERY HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\Legacy_SLSVC

    REG QUERY HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\Legacy_SPPSVC

     They may show something

  • Glad it makes sense to you :-)

I think Norton was installed as a standard package when the pc arrived but I took it off- I do have NOD32 Antivirus 8 installed -

  • Here's the cause of your problems...

    ConfigFlags    REG_DWORD    0x401

You will probably find that this fixes it...

Download the Norton Removal Tool from here https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?lg=english&ct=united+states&docid=20080710133834EN&product=home&version=1&pvid=f-home

Close all other programs, then run the tool. When it's complete, reboot the machine  whether it asks for it or not.

After the reboot, open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command

    NETSH WINSOCK RESET

You'll be advised to reboot - do so.

    then post another MGADiag report.

  • The error is still there :(

Have you ever had McAfee installed?

If so, Download the McAfee removal tool from:

    http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

Click Save, and save the file to a folder on your computer.

Navigate to the folder where you saved the file.

right-click on MCPR.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'  to run the removal tool.

    when complete, reboot.

If not, then there's a manual fix which usually works...

Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands

    sc config spldr start= boot

    sc start spldr

reboot twice, and run another MGADiag report

If that fails, then we'll have to dive into the registry :(

  • ... you may want to clear a minor error from the report I overlooked, before updating.

Attempt Validation using Internet Explorer, at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate - it should pass, and you'll be good to go.

If not, please post a new MGADiag report.
