  • Question

  • Dear Microsoft,

I purchased my Dell Inspiron 1420 more that 2 years ago in US. I had no major problem with my laptop since then. When I turned on mu laptop this morning, it asked me to enter a license code, saying that mine is invalid. This is so frustrating!! Here is  the report of the diagnostic tool:

  • This error is indicative of a corrupted licensing store (as noted by Noel and Darin in other threads), use the commands below to rebuild the licensing store, post back with a new report once completed. Error as follows: C:\Windows\system32\slmgr.vbs(1000, 9) (null): 0xC004E017

EDIT: see step 12, insure you have the COA sticker and a legible key before attempting. If the key is missing or unreadable you should consider backing up your data and doing a system restore because a valid key is required to complete the steps. The key in your report is an SLP key that is not valid for online activation.

    1) Open an Internet Browser window.
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
    3) Find the file CMD.exe
    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
    5) Type: net stop slsvc  (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    9) Type: net start slsvc
    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
    11) Restart your computer twice.
    12) You may be required to enter the Product Key and/or Activate. Be sure to use the Product key on the sticker on the side or bottom of the PC (some laptops may have the sticker located in the battery compartment) To Activate, please use the Activate by Phone option.

  • Unfortunately I cannot activate my windows by phone. When I call the call center they ask me to enter the first 6 digits of the confirmation id but I don't know where to find it.  Could you help me please?

  •

When you run the Activation process in Windows and you chose the Activate by Phone option, the same Activate by Phone window (that displayed the phone number to call the Activation center) will also have the Confirmation ID.

If you continue to have problems Activating, please post in the Install, Upgrade and Activate section of the Windows Vista Answers forum http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/windowsvista

    Thank you,
