Microsoft To 'Earn' Top Spot In Web Search - Berkowitz

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) will "earn" a top spot in Web search with strong products and innovation that capitalizes on the software giant's other technologies, its Internet czar, Steve Berkowitz, said Wednesday.

"We're moving fast," Berkowitz said, speaking at the Search Engine Strategies conference in New York. "We're just not where we need to be yet."

Microsoft will win over consumers and advertisers by "getting the basics right" in its young search and search-advertising services, making clever links between search and other Web services, and with improvements to its user interface. In the basics category, Berkowitz said Microsoft is testing a contextual advertising program, which involves matching keyword-based ads to the content of a Web page, and plans to roll it out on MSN in the coming months.

"It's never satisfactory not to be No. 1," he said. In competing with leaders Google Inc. (GOOG) and Yahoo Inc. (YHOO), "Microsoft's advantage is its scale and reach" to build the necessary network infrastructure and fund innovation. He said the company would turn its "maturity" into an advantage and use Windows and other Microsoft technologies to make its Internet ventures compelling.

Pointing to the huge storehouse of technology and engineering talent at Microsoft, Berkowitz said: "It's really about unlocking that potential because the potential is incredible."

"We're going to build an amazing business," he said, "by getting our stuff together."
