Popcorn hour and smb streaming RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hey

it seems like smb streaming only works well i my network when whs has finished balancing the pool.

i have run some tests and when whs is balancing i can stream without stuttering

    can other confirm this.

??? maybe adding a harddrive and not add it to the storage pool is the way to get nice streaming.

Does any one have a NFS program installed on their whs who can connect with Popcorn hour.

lets get at thread going here.

  • Chris,

I followed the steps in this link, specifically the steps from the first post. Pretty good guide and fairly painless to set up.

  • Have the Popcorn Hour A-100 here, SMB streaming works great. Haven't had any stuttering playing standard definition AVIs or even DVD ISO images (when balancing or not).

There's been a few posts on the networkmediatank.com forums about SMB speed recently; basically the A-100 has awful throughput from non-NFS shares (which is why you're asking about NFS, I'm guessing).

Have you tried using the supplied myihome server, or turning on UPNP (media sharing) on your WHS?

  • I have been away on a buissnes trip.

    I have enabled media sharing.

I also tryed myihome, but then i cant get subtitles and 5.1 sound to work.

And i agree the SMB should be enough to play ripped DVD from my server i have checked with a laptop and the connection is fine (1000 mbit ) to my router D-Link DIR-655.

Are you using HDMI or component?.

How do you store your movies ( iso or vob)

I will try ripping one of my movies to a harddrive and install it in popcorn hour.

  • I'm using composite. Movies are stored as ISO, some compressed to <4 GB with DVDShrink, some ripped at full quality.

Have you tried playing the DVD rip from your laptop, or did you just check network speed?

  • I too have a PCH and encountered stuttering when streaming VOB's and 1080P content via my MSS. After installing
NFS via Unix Services For Windows on my MSS, and streaming via NFS, all my sutterning woes went away. I don't even
have any shares mapped via SMB anymore, strictly NFS. Works like a charm and I have NO issues streaming anything, even
if I'm doing massive file copies to my MSS at the same time.

  • Hey

Yesterday i tryed installing the hanawin NFS server without any luck.

Do you min making a small manual how to install unix services on WHS or just a link to existing material

What about the router and windows firewall, do they need any change.

It looks like you have the solution, i just need some help.

    Best regards

Would be nice to know what you did with the guest account, i have the same problem,

even if i enable the guest account it wont work.

Edit: I found it out, you have to edit the folder permission so that the Guest user has read permissions, my problem was that i had only edit the share permission.
