Unable to add a new node (List of nodes empty) RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi all,

I'm trying to add a new node using the wizard "Add compute node".
Therefor I created two images (also using the wizard), one with a system, the other without.

Deployment method is "Deploy compute node...using an image".
In the next part there is a drop down menu to chose the node template.
Below there is a field where the computers shall appear (after decovery) to select them and  deploy the image to.

    Unfortunately no computer is discovered.
I use two machines with identical versions of Server 2k8 standard edition.
I created a separate Domain where both computers (head node and the other) are in and switched off the FW.
The computers can see each other in the network list. Sharing and remote desktop are working fine.

Does anyone have an idea to get it to work?

    Thanks and regards,
    Frank

  • if I understand your question right, you created two templates, one with a system Image, and one with out an image.
now you are trying to deploycompute nodes and you go to the add node wizard, but you don't see any compute nodes ...
if this is correct, i have some questions for you --
are you trying to build from baremetal?
or are you adding pre-configured nodes ( ie nodes with hpc pack and OS already installed).?
which option did you pick in the add node wizard?

if you are tyring to deploy to a compute node with OS already on there, but no HPC pack, you will need to either, install the hpc pack manually and then add as a pre-configured node, or have the node pxe boot and build it up, using a system image template, from baremetal.

  • I am having same problem, My setup is as follows

    1) I have got a machine setup with Windows 2008 Enterprise + AD Controller + DHCP Controller + DNS Server + HPC Head node
    2) HPC network configuration is set to "All nodes only on an enterprise network "( Option 5)
    3) I have created a Node template with **windows 2008 image**
    4)  When I try to Deploy a new node, by doing a bare metal deployment and selecting the node template with windows 2008 image
I come to the option where I wait for all nodes to appear but nothing happens

On the Client node which I am trying to setup the PXE Boot agent does not find any server to respond to

Am i doing this right? Do I need to setup any other options in HPC?

Thanks in advance for any help

  • Hi Mehul,
If you look at the documentation for understanding HPC Cluster Network Topologies, it states the following for option 5:
"Because all nodes are connected only to the enterprise network, you cannot use Windows Deployment Services (WDS) to deploy compute node images using the new deployment tools in windows HPC Server 2008."
If the machines you are using have two NIC's, then use one of the other topologies, 2 or 3 for example. If your machines only have one Network interface then you can use option 1.
Allow the HPC Network configuration wizard to configure the DHCP scope for the private network, don't manually configure the scope using the server 2008 DHCP snap-in. This will correctly configure and add the scope to your DHCP service which will allow your PXE clients to talk to your server.
    All the best.

  • That makes sense. Thanks for your help, I will try and reconfigure my network.
