There is no single cause for Cryptographic error, but the reason you are having Windows Genuine Advantage issue is that WGA utilizes the Cryptographic Services to detect Microsoft's Digital Signature to determine the software is Genuine. If the Cryptographic Services have errors, WGA can't do it's job.
There is a very simple fix, however:
1) Go to http://www.microsoft.com/Genuine/diag/ and click the “Start Diagnostic" button.
2) After the tool shows the error next to Cryptographic Services, click the "Resolve Now" button.
3) If the tool finds any other issues, follow the directions listed. That's it, the issue should be resolved. Please post back and tell us about your experience with the tool and if it was successful or not.
(You can read more about Cryptographic errors at http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=813442 )
