"Unconfigure" backup device RRS feed

  • Question

  • I attached a new USB hard drive and OneCare immediately popped-up a notification to "Configure" this as a backup device.  I "assumed" that clicking the balloon would open a dialog in which I could "choose" to configure the device or not.

However, OneCare configured the device and now the device shows up in My Computer without a drive icon and without a drive label.  Removing the drive and plugging it in again does not change this nor does changing the drive letter in Computer Management.  I have been unable to remove or "unconfigure" this device this as a OneCare backup device.

I rather suspect that there is a registry setting that can be changed or deleted but, I have not been able to find any by searching the Registry.

Does anyone know how a device that has been recognized or configured by OneCare can be removed from the list of backup devices?

  • No it wasn't an overlapping drive letter issue...I had already changed drive letters through Computer Management (twice) just to see if I could "tease" the system in recognizing the drive id.

Actually, the solution was much simpler...just reboot.  The correct drive id came up just fine in both Explorer & My Comp.  OneCare apparently caused a "burp" in the drive id's when it grabbed the external drive.  So...problem solved.

Regardless, thanks for offering the help!

BTW:  I am still looking for OneCare/Microsoft to permit more than 3 PCs in a circle. We've got ~25 machines that I "say grace over" and we'd really really really like to be able to monitor everyone's machine through the OneCare ("OneCircle" <g>) interface.....just another "nudge".......

  • If the external hard drive does not appear in Windows Explorer, I suspect it isn't OneCare, but an overlapping drive letter designation conflicting with a mapped drive or the drive is unformatted.

Open Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Disk Management (under Storage) and your physical drives will be displayed.

The removable drive will appear in this list and will show the assigned drive letter and the format and status of the drive.

You can change the drive letter to one that is not used by a Drive Mapping that has been configured for a Network Share and you can format the drive from here, too.

Once you've changed the drive letter, you'll probably want to correct the OneCare backup settings as follows:

    Open OneCare

    Click Change Settings

    backup tab

Click change settings in the lower left

Make sure that the first screen for Centralized Backup has "No Centralized backup" selected

Click your PC on the left.

Uncheck the selection for "Turn on backup for this PC."

Click Next and save the revised plan.

Go back to the backup tab and click Change Settings in the lower left once again.

    Select your PC and click.

    Click Turn on backup

Select the change location link and select the drive you want to use for backup

Modify the schedule as desired for "When"

Select the file types as desired for "What"

Click next and save the revised plan with the new selection.

Please let us know if this fixes it for you.

  • I do so love simple solutions! Thanks for letting us know what fixed it. I'll have to plug in an external drive on a OneCare machine to see this prompt. Did you already have backup turned on for that PC? I don't recall being prompted by OneCare when plugging in a new drive, but then I always turn backup off.

  • How do you turn backup off?   OneCare is complaining  that I have not configured backup.  I don't want to.   I can back things up on my own, then I know where they are and what is in them.  Also I don't end up with duplicates and backups of things I no longer need.
