Windows Product Key Interchangeability RRS feed

  • Question

  • A friend was given a PC with XP Professional on it. The PC has a sticker on it with the Product key.
We do not have the Professional disks OR the password, and cannot get either.

Can I use my XP Home Edition software to reinstall windows from scratch, and then use the XP Professional product key on the sticker?

Are there any other solutions or recommendations?

    Thanks in advance.

  • An OEM Windows XP Professional product key will only work with a Windows XP Professional OEM installation CD.

  • Hello Gman321,

If this is a name brand computer, quite often you can get replacement manufacturer reinstallation or recovery discs from the PC manufacturer for a modest fee.

If this is not a name brand PC, and on the CoA the second line has "OEM Product" or "OEM Software" printed on it, then you can get a replacement genuine Microsoft hologrammed CD.  Go to this article http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/326246 and scroll down to this section "Media replacement for users of system builders' computers" and choose your region for further information.

  • Thank you all for the great answers. To my surprise, I remembered that I do have a copy of xp Pro from one of my older PCs! So, I will install that on my friend's PC and use is product key to validate it. The info you provided is very good to know and should be helpful to others though - thanks again.
