Microsoft Fit it Center install error

Question
-
1. I downloaded FixitCenter_Run.exe, and the CD/DVD drive fix (http://support.microsoft.com/gp/cd_dvd_drive_problems), ran both and received the error: "Fix it Center Setup encountered an error. An unexpected error has occurred. Please close and try to run Setup again later."
2. I tried disabling firewall and antivirus (and of course rebooting several times), this didn't help.
2. I tried to rename the registry key: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\IniFileMapping\Autorun.inf", but it doesn't exist on my system.
3. I tried to install Powershell 1.0, but the Windows Genuine Advantage tool on the site is outdated and failed. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926139
I'm lost, please help.
System: Windows XP Home 32 SP3, Nod 32, Zonealarm.

Hi - Pietpeer,
Check the permissions for the windows folder (C:\WINDOWS). I had a similar problem (Error 0x8007F05A) and finally figured out that the permissions for the windows folder were set so that a files couldn't be written there. I'm not sure what the default permissions are but I changed it so that I and "system" had "Full Control" and that fixed the problem.
I don't usually post things but I, like you, had no luck finding any solution related to that error code.
More information on permissions is here:

I also tried this proposed fix (from this thread: http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en/fixitcenter/thread/3d1bc27a-525f-4422-9d51-0fab72484d6c):
FixitCenter_Run.exe Crashes immediately after executing.
From what I can tell "FixitCenter_Run.exe" does nothing except detect the operating system and then down load the correct files for installation.
To go around this problem:
MSI Install
Extact the "FixitCenter_Run.exe" using winzip or winrar and parse the URL's needed from the INF to download the files required for your OS to completed the installation.
Tested on WindowsXP 32bit
Here are the parsed links from the inf.

Hi Yan,
Thanks for your suggestion. I tried your suggestion and also tried (succesfully) updating to .NET Framework 4.0. Still no result.
I've also tried installing Powershell separately, because the error seems to come from there. I was unable to do this. When installing Powershell from here (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/confirmation.aspx?FamilyId=60cb5b6c-6532-45e0-ab0f-a94ae9ababf5&displaylang=en) i get the following error: ''error opening kb968930.log file''. Via Microsoft Update installation also fails:Error Code: 0x8007F05A.
Googling these errors doesn't get me any ferther. I'm beginning to wonder whether I have a more fundamental software issue at hand here...
Thanks in advance for your help,
Pietpeer

Hi pietpeer,
Thanks for your feedback. To further troubleshoot the problem and find root reason, could you please re-install "Fix it center" application? If you still encounter the same error or other error, please go to "Windows event logs" and provide your event logs to me. To visit windows event logs below steps please refer
Step 1:
1. Control panel -> All Control Panel Items -> Administrative Tools -> Open Event Viewer
2. Event Viewer -> Windows Logs -> Applications
After you select this section and please note to source content, if you find any error/warning about "fix it center/matsvc" please provide to me.
Steps 2:
1. Control Panel- > All Control Panel Items -> Administrative Tools ->Open Event Viewers
2. Event Viewer -> Applications and Services Logs->Microsoft->Windows-> Diagnosis-ScriptedDiagnosticsProvider
If you find any error/warning about error code "0x8007F05A" please provide to me.

Hi Yan,
What Event viewer do you mean? If I go to Start -> Accessories -> Administrative tools, I find the Event viewer. In the event viewer I can only see a tab 'Event Viewer Local' with sub tabs 'Application', 'Security', 'System', and 'Internet Explorer'.
When I try to install Fix it center again, nothing shows up under any of the options. I tried rebooting and disk cleanup, this doesn't help.
I cannot see the options under Step 2, could you help me find them?

Dear Pietpeer,
I'm sorry for delay. Thanks for your feedback. According to your above describe. I guess it is may network proxy related. Could you please try below steps:
1. Control Panel -> All Control Panel Items -> Administrative Tools -> Services
2. Right click "Microsoft Automation Troubleshooting Service" and select "Properties"
3. On Tab "Log on" Select "Local System" instead of "This account" and check the "Allow the service to interact with desktop".

Hi Yan,
No problem for the delay :)I tried to find the "Microsoft Automation Troubleshooting Service" in Services, but it's not there (not under the Extended, nor under the Standard tab). I tried googling it, but that leads me back to the FixIt website. Is there some way to add it to Services?
Thanks again & Happy New Year :)

Hi Pietpeer,
Thanks for your posted, the "Microsoft Automation Troubleshooting Service" not found that is explain you haven't passed install preconditions. I thinks your issue was related "PowerShell" install failed on your OS. But PowerShell is installed to enable the scripted diagnostic feature in the Fix it Center application. So I would suggest posting your question("3. I tried to install Powershell 1.0, but the Windows Genuine Advantage tool on the site is outdated and failed. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926139" or "The Powershell installation however gives the following Setup error: Error opening KB926139-v2.log file.") in one of the Microsoft TechNet > Forums Home > Windows Server > Windows PowerShell located here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/winserverpowershell/threads/.
If you installed PowerShell successful, please try install "Fix It Center" again,If you still have any question or error please provide your error message and continue discuss with us. Thanks.

Hi Scott,
That did the trick! I rebooted in safe mode, found the security tab in properties (it apparently doesn't show up in normal mode), changed the write permissions, rebooted normally again and installed fix it without any problems.
I also didn't note the standard write settings, but I did make a restore point before rebooting in safe mode. Unfortunately, and you will always see this, my restore points don’t seem to work. Standard settings are unable to be found, at least in wordings that are understandable to a noob like myself. I did find a way to restore the default security settings, by using this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308419 which is, ironically, a Microsoft Fix it solution ;-)
Thanks for posting your answer, it really helped me out. In my other thread (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverpowershell/thread/07ff76ad-370d-4ace-8d93-da378c417448) I also could not find a proper solution.

This seemed to work for me. I have read more than I ever wanted to know.
I'm always amazed how MS hears from us but can't even fix their own software. It's reality and reflects their true feelings for their customers.

I have always found Microsoft amazingly helpful and they have cared for my PC since new and now old. They even understood when a crook took my money and installed illegally a false copy as genuine software when I first bought this PC. They fixed it somehow that I was allowed to use my PC as normal and always updated everything.
So I just want to give honour where honour is due....as I got a lot of enjoyment out of learning and using the internet since then all thanks to microsoft.
Am a great grandma and am totally not savvy when it comes to technical stuff yet somehow Microsoft always keep me running clear of problems up to now. I entered a question here as I am stymied with this particular problem and I just know that somehow microsoft will end up fixing my problem as they always do. :)
