For last two days my IT works pc, which I have had since Dec 04, and on which have updated windows automatically ever since with out problems
now informs me that my copy is not genuine - any help would me much appreciated. The ITworks "support line" referred me back to Microsoft.

Mersal,
Rerun the mgadiag utility. On the Windows tab, click the "Resolve" button. It will run a script that can sometimes clear up the cryptographic problems that your system is experiencing.
After doing that, restart the computer and navigate to this site http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/default.mspx?displaylang=en and click Validate Windows, let it run, restart.
Please post back with results.

This worked fine, presume my first attempt failed on pressing resolve button as I committed the fundamental error of not restarting afterwards and going back to validation site.
