Comptuers & Live Desktop out of sync RRS feed

  • Question

  •  My Live Mesh sychronization has generally gotten "messed up".  I have a folder that I am synching between two different computers and the Live Desktop.  Right now, all three folders have different contents, and they don't show any indication of getting synched up correctly.

    The problem started this morning when Live Mesh indicated that I was no longer synchronized with one of my computers, and when I did try to sync it up again, it asked if it wanted to merge with the existing folder, and I said "Yes".  It then presented me with many conflicts, which I resolved (two files/folders with same name).  Changes seem to have been made on Live Desktop, but the actual folder on my computer is a wierd mish-mash of files.

    I do in fact have two folders on Live Desktop with exactly the same names!  That was one of the problems I "resolved" earlier.  However, on my computer, there is only one folder with that name, but it is missing 6 of its 8 folders within it, and the 2 folders that are there don't have any files.

    I am wondering what I should do in order to:

    1.  Report this problem in a coherent manner?
    2.  How do I go about getting this thing corrected?  Do I need to resync the one computer that has the files I want?  Live Desk need to have a bunch of files removed (the duplicates).

  • Hi,

    The best way to report the issue would be to collect your Live Mesh logs and submit a bug report so that we can take a closer look at what's going on (though, of course, posting here in the forums is a good first step :) ).  Instructions for collecting logs and submitting a bug are in an Announcement at the top of the forums.  Once you've filed your bug, if you'd be willing to post the Connect Feedback ID here, that would help me to track the bug internally, and will allow other customers to view and validate your bug.

    Thanks,

    Ben.

  • I had a similar thing happen today, is it a Mesh problem?

    I had a folder synced on two machines (I'll call c1 & c2), added a third (c3) and for some reason it created a new folder on the Mesh Desktop with the same name as existing one. I redid the sync and now things are working again except there are duplicates of some files on the Mesh desktop. c3 is showing conflicts for these duplicate files but c1 & c2 are not which seems odd when they are supposed to be showing the same! Deleting them is painfully slow, and one by one.

  • I think mine was an operator error, sort of. The mesh folder I sync'ed is not on the desktop but in spite of me spec'ing the correct folder for initial sync it started sync'ing to a desktop hosted one it had created. I then changed the sync setting and the correct folder started updating but some files & folders were duplicated in the mesh desktop.

    Careful use of conflict res sorted that, but find the tool not very intuative, but the whole process would have been easier with two tools;

    • A decent conflict resolution tool as found the Mesh & local file dates/times didn't match at all.Knowing what you were deleting was a bit hit & miss.
    • A force sync, or re-sync, command and better report of progress. Not knowing when/if Mesh is updating makes tracing deletes/changes a bit hit & miss

    Hi robincapper,

    We definitely have improvements to make to the conflict resolution experience, as you note - and we're working hard on that.  We've also seen suggestions similar to your last one: that we add more user control over what, when, and where things sync.  I've added your vote for that to our internal list of customer suggestions.

    I'm sorry that getting this sorted out was such a pain.  Thanks for your patience,

    Ben.

  • Hi Ben, It appears the real problem might be the inability to delete subfolders within Mesh. The cloned content turned out to be subfolders which were being duplicated (with the same content) from each Mesh Device. I had a "Blog Draft" folder with subfolder "!Template".

    C:\Mesh_Local
    >Blog Draft
    >>!Template

    On each device you saw that but in the mesh desktop there were duplicate "!Template" folders, one per device;

    //Mesh
    >Blog Draft
    >>!Template
    >>!Template
    >>!Template

    I removed the subfolders on each device then the conflicts stopped occurring but I still have one orphan !Template folder in the Mesh Desktop. Before doing that every time a device sync'ed it reported duplicate files.

    Should add that other than this minor hassle have been very impressed with the preview and like the mesh concept. I watched Amit Mital's keynote from Tech Ed (New Zealand) today. Was good to see Mesh featured. Our "real IT gurus" were there but IT is only part of my role, cad software management, so wasn't able to attend.

  • Hi Robin,

    We also have a problem in the current version of Live Mesh that can cause serious problems any time a Live Mesh folder is deleted, or has it's sync setting changed (see the Notice at the top of the Announcements section of the forums).  I'm not sure that issue is involved in the problem you were seeing, but it's worth being aware of just in case.  We expect to have a fix for the problem mentioned in the Announcement very soon.

    Ben.

  • Glad to hear it, Robin. :)  (That was a pretty nasty bug, and we worked hard to get that fix out quickly.  I'm glad it helped!)

  • I love the new release!  Some sync problems I had are fixed, the little pop-up that appears when you you put the mouse over the tray icon is much faster (before the update it would get stuck).
