User Name Access for client side PC Issue RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello, Might be a simple answer, just not seeing it in the forum. I am 1 day into setting up WHS so I am a newbie. Here's my issue: The actual server seems setup correctly. The setup of my first laptop appears correct:
    1. The user name i login into the laptop matches the username account i setup on the server.
    2. I am able to access/see all the shared Server folders in Explorer/Network
No issue with Vista laptop. My issue is with my second Vista pc. I only have one administrator account on it - called 'itd0pwg'. I loaded the connector software successfully and setup an account on the server with the same name of 'itd0pwg' but i get a connector error saying the user account doesn't match the server. The message states the name should be setup as 'User'. Doesn't seem to make sense to me as i only have one account on the pc and i thought they had to be the same. So, instead i then setup an account on the server of 'User' and the error went away. But, when i try to access Explorer/Network the shared folders nor my server icon appears like they do for my laptop. Any ideas? Again, thanks for your help. Probably a really simple fix. (i've got to buy a book i think) Regards, Peter.

  • Hello Kariya21,
First, my apologies -  I searched the forum for answers, apparently not very well.
Second, earlier today i did notice  the user name was different using the advanced user account link via the control panel but I didn't know how to correct it. Your link was invaluable. Thank you for responding. I was able to correct the issue and link to server without error.
I only have one annoying problem - still, i can only access the server via the shared folders icon on my desktop or the home server icon on my toolbar. When i open a seperate windows explorer and click on NETWORK the Server icon does not show up like it does on my laptop. Is this something i just have to live with or are you aware of a setting?
Regardless, thank you for your assistance. Much appreciated.

Probably because your server is not in the same workgroup as that client.  You should try changing the workgroup of the client that doesn't work to match the workgroup name of the one that does work.

  • Thank you for the response. The pc's all are on the same workgroup, the generic 'WORKGROUP' name. I did notice i can't even map a drive to point to the shared server folders on the pc in question. Seems i have to keep logging in too after a period of time.

  • Seemed to have resolved the issue - went to Network and Sharing Center => Selected Media sharing down arrow => Change button => updated Share media: from 'user' to my user id name which is the same as the server name. thanks for your help. I'll keep plugging along.
