Vista validation problem RRS feed

    Hi

    I got a Hp computer with a preinstalled Windows vista. Suddenly one day, when i startet my computer a message telling me that my vista is'nt real appared, and i know it's real! The message tells me to call, or buy another windows vista product key. If i try to write the code on the back of my laptop, it's telling me that the code is invalid. I've tryed to reinstall vista fram my recovery disc, but nothing changes.

    What can i do?

    Hello Olva,

     

    First off, there is a Support Doc: "You may be prompted to activate Windows Vista on a computer on which Windows Vista was already activated by a Volume License or OEM installation" at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;931573  That I beleive is specific to your issue. Please follow the resolution portion of the doc.

     

      The that does not resolve your issue, please follow the steps below. If the first set of steps does not resolve, move on to the next set of steps.

     

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Step set #1

     

    (If you access to the start button)

    1) Click the Start button

    2) Type cmd in the Start Search field

    3) At the top the Start window, you will see cmd.exe

    4) Right Click cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator

    5) Type: cscript %windir%\System32\slmgr.vbs /ilc %windir%\System32\licensing\ppdlic\Security-Licensing-SLC-ppdlic.xrm-ms

    6) Hit the Enter key

    7) Reboot 2 times

     

    (If you Do Not access to the start button)

    1) Click the option Access computer with reduced functionality

    2) A Browser will open, type: %windir%\system32 into the address field

    3) Find the file cmd.exe

    4) Right Click on the cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator

    5) Type: cscript %windir%\System32\slmgr.vbs /ilc %windir%\System32\licensing\ppdlic\Security-Licensing-SLC-ppdlic.xrm-ms

    6) Hit the Enter key

    7) Reboot 2 times

    2) Type: slui.exe 3 and hit the Enter key

    3) Type in the Product key from the sticker on your computer

    4) Click the Next button.

    5) You will be asked if want to Activate, click ok

    6) It will attempt to Activate by the internet and will return an Invalid Key error (this is ok, continue to step 7)

    7) Click the Start button

    8) Type: slui.exe 4 and hit the Enter key

    9) Select your location in the drop down menu and click the Next button

    10) The next screen provides the number to call to Activate by Phone

     

    NOTE: when you call that number, you will first hear an Automated Voice that will try to Activate Vista for you. If the Automated Voice gives you an option to talk to a Live Activation Rep, select that option. If not, do not enter any numbers. This should force the Automated Voice to transfer you to a Live Activation Rep. Trying to Activate thru the Automated Voice will not work, in your case, only thru the Live Activation Rep will your Activation be successful.

     

    Once completed, you may need to reboot twice.


     

    (If you Do Not access to the start button)

    3) Find the file CMD.exe

    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select Run as Administrator

    5) Type: net stop slsvc  (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)

    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing

    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar

    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32

    9) Type net start slsvc

    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)

    11) Reboot Twice

    12) You may be required to Re-Activate. Use the Activate by Phone method outlined below

     

     

    Activate by Phone steps:

     

    a) If you have access to the Start button: Click the Start button, and type in "slui.exe 4" in the search field and then press the "Enter" key. This will bring up the Activate by Phone dialog window. Follow the steps provided by the window. The phone activation process should only take about 6 minutes.


    b) If you do not have access to the Start button: Reboot and login to Vista, a dialog window will come up. In that window, click the option "Access computer with reduced functionality". Once you do that, Internet Explorer or Firefox browser will open. In the address bar type "c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe" press enter, a new window will come up, type: slui 4 and hit enterand follow steps to Activate over the Phone.


    NOTE: The key to this process is that you need to talk to a Live Activation Rep! When you first call, you will be interacting with an Automated Voice, either select the option to talk to a Live Rep or if there is no option, do not enter any numbers. This should force the automated voice to tansfer you to a Live Rep.

  • i'm having the same issue.

    I talked with Jill, Ryan, Kristy, Kevin Wilson, and Michelle at alot of different numbers. They bounced me back and forth between many different departments. Every single one of them told me that they weren't able to help me, but that they were confident that the person they were connecting me with WAS the person who could help me.

    I cannot get into control panel. It pops up a box and disappears quickly. I cannot get into my computer properties.

    When i load certain third party software, or when i open windows or pretty much whenever i do anything, a popup says something about windows aero not working, or it says that this copy of windows is not genuine. There is a notice on the bottom right corner of my screen saying Windows Vista (TM) Build 6000 This copy of Windows is not genuine.

    I spent over 2 hours either on hold or explaining my situation to all of the people I listed above. There were actually 2 or 3 more names that I didn't get down because I didn't realize I would have to make a list.

    Kevin Wilson seemed to genuinely try to help me and was at a loss for what he could do more. He was one of the supervisors I asked to talk to.

    Everyone else was quick to say that they couldn't help me but they were sure that the next person was.

    Michelle offered to connect me with someone who could help, but told me that it would cost 59 dollars. I told her that I refused to pay extra to have the software fixed and that I expected to have it fixed tonight. She informed me that there were no supervisors on the property and that she was the only person left in the building. (something about her accent suggested to me that she was about 12 hours different in time zone than I was.) After I told her that I wasn't satisfied and that I expected her to find a supervisor, she said "OK i will get a supervisor for you. I was put on hold for about 2 minutes and then someone picked up, said something that sounded like some sort of foreign profanity, and hung up on me.

    I'm honestly considering never ever using microsoft software ever again.

    When I spent thousands of dollars on something, I expect it to work. If I have to pay Apple twice as much for a stable OS, I suppose I might as well switch.

    If I don't get the help I need before monday, I will be returning this laptop to Hewlett Packard and I'll make the official switch to Mac.

    Furthermore, my intentions are to express my concern to the better business bureau if the situation isn't resolved promptly.

    Is there anything that anyone at Microsoft can do to help me, or should I expect the same level of care that I have already received?

    This is exactly whats wrong with my computer!

    I called to microsoft last night, and met a asian guy. I'm from Norway, so my english is'nt the best in the world, but this guy talked anything but english. So I probably spent much money on something I did'nt understand.

    Guess I'll switch to Apple myself!

  • Best advise I've heard yet!!! Switch to a Mac. Microsoft is no help!!!!
    I'm doing the same. I already have enough gray hair. A person shouldn't have to fix a brand new product.

  • I also purchased a computer with windows Vista installed and I have had nothing but sleepless nights and unsatisfactory results. Is it possible to uninstall Vista and install XP Pro? I just want this garbage off of my computer. Please Help.

  • My problem's a little difficult to deal with as I got the laptop for my mother who is 79
    (she doesn't use it unless I'm there) and lives 150 miles away. I'm lucky
    if I get there every other weekend but won't be going now till March or
    April. A two week interval is bad enough for catching up the updates but now
    I won't even be able to do that.
    I am getting the Error code OxC004D401 as close as I can remember (on Dec 26,07). Not sure if I can send a
    diagnostic report as it won't let me access the control panel. This is NOT the first time this has happened. It has
    happened at least 3 previous times but after A LOT of frigging around and A LOT of time I was able to get it corrected.
    May have been other reasons the other times???? The point is, you shouldn't continuously have to
    validate your product.
    It would be a GOOD idea for MS to install a patch for all these different validation errors. HINT HINT!

    The next time I go I might bring it home and have it 'upgraded' to XP, if that's possible?????
     In the meantime I plan to shop for an Apple!

  • First off, I am Locking this Thread.

     

      I can not troubleshoout 5 diffrent people in the same thread.  If you have an issue, create your Own thread for your Own issue. Include a Diagnostic Report and a detailed description of your issue.

     

     

      Olva: Did you try the steps that I provided? Did they work? If not, please create a New thread and post the Diagnostic Report.

     

     Everyone Else: I would  like to direct you all to my first post in this thread. The steps provided have been shown to resolve the majority of issues involving pre-installed copies of Vista. I Highly suggest trying those steps before creating your own issue thread.
