unresolved conflicts on sync

Question
-
Why does LM not know what to do with identical files in two folders. I just added two folders from two computers onto LM and it reports 50 conflicts, all from files that are apparently identical (same size, timestamp). I would think it would just pick one of them and discard the other instead of making me click 50 choices?
Thanks for any suggestions on how to avoid the manual labor ;)

Live Mesh errs on the side of caution. The files are not identical if Live Mesh reports them as a conflict. Unfortunately, manually dealing with the conflicts is the only way to go and it isn't very easy in the current implementation of Live Mesh. Live Sync handles it differently - when it detects a conflict it copies both files to the other PC(s) and appends the originating PC name to it, effectively duplicating your file to all PCs you sync with.
The files have a "hash" that is used to determine if the file is different or the same - it does not simply depend on size and date/time.
If you are setting up a folder for the first time in your Mesh, and wish to merge it with the same folder on other PCs, the easist way to avoid conflict is to install SyncToy and use that to copy/sync the folder manually to the other PCs. This will only work on a LAN, though, not over the Internet.

Thanks for your reply Steve. As an added note if I choose to keep a file in the unresolved conflicts pane the pane shows up again empty of any content with the only option being skip. After skipping the pane shows the text conflict 2/50 but again the pane reappears blank allowing only skip as an option. By selecting one of the two files to keep the conflict count should have been reduced by 1 but if I choose cancel on the empty panes the conflict count remains at 50 even though the event pane on the right shows the first file was updated. So even if I was willing to employ this tedious process the provided mechanism appears to be, sadly, borked and unusable.Sunday, March 28, 2010 9:10 AM

Try dealing with the conflicts via the Live Desktop view at www.mesh.com - some people have noted this is a better path to deal with them. Not much better, mind you, but it may be helpful.

Oh, and I'll note that conflicts are presented in blocks of 50, which would explain, perhaps, why it doesn't reduce the count by one after dealing with one conflict. Painful. I know.

Yikes, so there may be many more conflicts... painful yes, usable... no. LM looks like a great paradigm, hope it gets solid soon. Still the conflict resolution pane is broken, as it doesn't display anything but the first conflicted file... after that the pane is just blank with only a skip option.Sunday, March 28, 2010 4:43 PM

Yes, the next version should be *much* better at conflict resolution.-steve
