Restore require partition? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi all, I want to use my WHS to help me swap a notebook HHD with an SSD.  So my plan is to manually back up, then restore bare metal onto the new drive.

Only thing is, with the SSD, to achieve good performance it needs to have the partition aligned properly (something MS noted in a Windows 7 discussion).  If I use WHS, will it just format/add files or will it re-partition the drive?

    thanks in advance!

  • Hi,
to restore a backup from WHS, you need to create the target volume first. This must have the same or a higher size than the original volume had.
The partitioning is not happening automatically, you can do this from within the recovery environment with Disk Management console or from a running OS (if you plan to perform the restore process with ClientRestoreWizard.exe on a running client) also with disk management.
