Lights Out Add-In Questions RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have managed to get Lights Out working by following the instructions for disabling SBCore Service, by going into the WHS by remote-desktop and disabling that service.

    Questions:

    - Is this the right place to ask questions about how to use this add-in?

    - Does anyone have recommendations for settings?  I found that it just kept going into hibernation pretty regularly.

    - I guess getting it out of hibernation or suspension requires hitting the button on the back of the machine?

    - Suggestion to developers.  Maybe it would be good to have an option simply to set specific times of day at which the device should go into hibernation, unless in use?

  • Sure the Microsoft Forums are always a good place to mingle but there is also a great Lights Out specific section on the WGS forums here:

  • I simply use LightsOut to hibernate my WHS from 1am to 6.45am
I run my backups between 00 and 1am.
LightsOut offers a number of options (eg remote wakup) that are beyond my requirements but that does not mean it isn't a great plug in!

  • As Alexander already explained, the two primary support areas for LightsOut are
    WeGotServed (English)
    Forum.Home-Server-Blog.de (German)

The Add-In home page is here:
    http://www.home-server-blog.de/add-ins/lightsout/#en

Please have a look at the online documentation here, especially the requirements section:
    http://www.axonet.de/whs/LightsOutEn.pdf

The default settings should work out of the box. The server is runing as long as any client is active.
When there's an additional requirement for up- or downtimes use the calendar.

To start your server from hibernation (or standby) install the LightsOut Client application on your client machines.
This application monitors your clients for boot up or resume from standby and sends a Wake-On-Lan packet to your server.

  • On WHS 2011 my LightsOut latest version keeps disappearing from the server.  Have reinstalled three times today but presently no lights out icon on dashboard, but listed under add ins.  Previously disappeared from add ins and icon and clients.  Any idea what the problem is?
