2 issues with new forums RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • I've been using the new forums since back in May when the SSDS Get Started forum appeared here. Generally I'm very pleased - much better than the old forums.

2 things that I would like fixing though:
    1.  I follow the RSS feed for various forums so that I can see new posts. I use Google Reader for reading the feed. On the majority of occasions that I click through to a post on http://social.microsoft.com/Forums I get diverted to an "Error: Does not exist" page or something similar. I click the link again immediately after and it works - it would be nice if it wored first time. (Of course, sod's law states that as I write this thread I can't reproduce the error so I can't give you the URL of the error page nor the exact error message. I'll hopefully remember to come back here and update next time I see the problem)
    2. When authoring a post if I highlight a block of text and hit "Indent" then the whole of the post gets indented, not just the highlighted text. Please fix.

Other than that I think tese forums are a great step forward (just give us a decent offline reader that syncs with the forums - please).

    Regards
    -Jamie

  • I can tell you how to deal with your second issue, Jamie, and I would also like to see this fixed!
Change the view of the post to <> and you'll see that the indent applies to everything because hitting enter does not make a new paragraph in the compose window... Insert a </p><p> before (or after) the text you wish to not indent. In essence, mark off the text you want to indent and then apply the indent from the toolbar.

  • You're welcome. I think I'll actually start a new thread with this as a bug, marked as a question.

Hitting Enter in compose box does not generate a paragraph break </P><P>, rather it generates a plain <br> of line feed. This causes attributes intended for a paragraph to be applied to the entire post, such as indent.

Interestingly, I just discovered that hitting enter a few times and then putting the cursor in the paragraph above and clicking the bullet attribute and then unclicking it causes the <br> tags to become <p> tags.

There's some funky stuff happening with the HTML tag generation in this compose window.

  • We've got a fix in for this (creating a <p> rather than a <br> on enter) that should hopefully go live next week...
