Why not use a "CAPTCHA" prior to starting a post or topic? RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • If you read the title, I'm sure you might be wondering why the Web Developer for Microsoft TechNet hasn't implemented it, at least for the sign-up process.

It's the easiest way to avoid spammers and/or bots.

  • CAPTCHAs are very easily defeated by many automated methods, so I'm not exactly sure that this is really the best method of avoiding our spammer friends.

Also, I respond to tons of threads. If I had to type a captcha each time I posted, I simply wouldn't be here (and I doubt many other frequent users would be either). Perhaps using a captcha for starting a thread could be useful, but again remember that they are very easily defeated.

I've suggested that the forums software needs to implement simple post/thread creation rate limiting. That would stop many of our current spammers right in their tracks.
