I just bought windows vista home premium 32-bit OEM for system builders. From newegg.com so it defently is genuine. Its been one headache after another. First off i bought the SP1 disk so i didnt have to download it. first time i installled windows everything worked for for about 24 hours then i boot up next day. It wouldnt windows would start long story short had to reformat whole drive start fresh. Now nothing is working properly SP1 update disk just stops installing with some error. So i try auto update nope error there too. Vista also didnt like my samsung dvd r/w drive after 6 hours. stoped detecting but it works fine in my old PC. so im using my old IDE drive now. Also explorer.exe constantly has to restart most programs dont install properly. please help

Hello drunkalien6,
The reason that your Vista is showing as Non-Genuine is that 3 critical system files (Slsvc.exe, shunimpl.dll, query.dll) have been Modified or have become Corrupt. In particular file Slsvc.exe is used by Vista to check itself to confirm it is Genuine. If that file is Modified/Corrupt, it won't run correctly and Vista will assume itself to be Non-Genuine. (you can see these files listed in your Diagnostic Report under the "File Scan Data" line).
The only ways, that I have seen, for this to happen are:
a) User Manually modified the files or knowingly installed software made to modify critical system files (usually in an attempt to bypass Activation and Validation).
b) A Malicious program (such as a Virus) modified the files without the user's knowledge (also some very old programs (Windows 3.1 time period) may also attempt to replace windows system file with an older version, but that is extremely rare).
c) Hard Drive is failing (even a partal failure or an intermittent malfunction can cause files to corrupt. And even new hard drives have a chance of failing).
Given the other problems you have experienced, my first guess would be hard drive failure...But that is just a guess, I can not be sure, just by talking with you on the forum. You would need to contact someone experienced with hard drives, to be sure.
To resolve the issue, the only suggestions I can provide, to get those files back to working order, is to either try a Repair or (and if that doesn't work), to Reinstall. But if your hard drive is, in fact, malfuntioning (and you continue using it) this issue (or a different one) may occure again.
Sorry I couldn't be more help,

Ahh thank you so much for your help. When i was using windows a bunch of my windows files started to malfunction so i restarted through my case button cause it couldnt even shut itself down. it wouldnt boot up said winload.exe is corrupt so did clean install of windows with a full drive reformat. Fixed everything passes WGA i got all the updates now. But i am still kind of disaponted the way Vista was at release time. Thank you for your help, and you were right they were corrupt.Saturday, April 5, 2008 4:04 AM
