Microsft keep telling me that my version of Office is not genuine RRS feed

  • Question

  • I cannot download the OGA plugins as they just disappear into the computer and I cannot find them and I am getting sick and tired of this rubbish message, Office came with the computer from Dell - either this is sorted with an easy solution as I am nearly 70 and not a computer geek so if this issue cannot be resolved in plain, simple English or I am provided with a freephone number then I will ditch Office and go to Open Office. I try the activate under help but message is that the product is already activated so complete rubbish there as well.

  • Hello Agoeseke,

    OGA Data-->
    Office Status: 103 Blocked VLK
Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 - 103 Blocked VLK
    OGA Version: Registered, 2.0.48.0
    Signed By: Microsoft

The Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 is Non-Genuine.  It was installed using a Blocked Volume Licensce Key (VLK). VLK software is not to be sold to consumers, but are designed for large organizations that need 10s 100s or 1000s of Office installs.  In this case the VLK is Blocked which means that the organization requested that Microsoft Block the key likely due to it being stolen or leaked to the internet.

The reason you hadn't see the Non-Genuine message sooner is that Office doesn't have any anti-piracy systems other then Activation and this pirated Product Key is a Volume License Key that doesn't require Activation.  The only way for you to have found out that the Office was Non-Genuine would have been if you had gone to http://Microsoft.com/genuine and click the 'Validate Office", gone to the Office Download site and attempted to download any validation protected content or by installing the Office Notifier. Microsoft recently released the Office Notifier thru Windows Update and it is what is notifying you that the Office is Non-Genuine

Now, I am Not accusing you of piracy. There are a number of reason why your Office would be using a Pirated key. The three most common are:

    1) You may have bought the software from a unscrupulous seller who sold you pirated software.

In which case I recommend, if possible, contacting that seller and demand the Genuine Microsoft software, that you paid for or at least a refund. I also recommend submitting a Piracy Report at http://microsoft.com/piracy

    or

    2) You had your computer worked on (by a repair person, a friend or that smart kid down the street) and in the course of fixing the PC, they had to reinstall Office.  Instead of contacting you to get the proper Product Key, (maybe due to not knowing it was wrong or due to laziness) they downloaded it from the internet.

In this case, you probably have a Genuine copy (and Product Key) of Office, you just need to uninstall the Non-genuine one and reinstall the software using the proper (Genuine) Product Key

    or

    3) A repair person, a friend or that smart kid down the street may have thought they were doing you a Favor by installing a copy of Office on your computer, "for Free".  But in fact he/she installed a Pirated Copy.  It's all togeather possible they didn't know they were doing anything wrong and thought they were just being nice.

In this case, the best way to resolve the issue would be to uninstall the software and if you still want to use Office, buy it from a trusted retailer or online store.

    Thank you,

  • Hello connie1049,

If you click on this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 and then keep clicking "Run" rather than save, the mgadiag utility should never leave your screen.  Once it starts up, click Continue.  Then when it's done, click the Copy button and come back here to paste the report into your reply.

Please give that a try. :-)

Based on what you wrote I have a feeling what you are encountering is a problem we have seen before and have a fix for, but before we send you off to try it, we'd like to see the report first, if you can get it to run.

    To Dan at IT Associates

I tried what you suggested but all the window says is "save file" or "cancel" - anybody know how to get Office documents into "Open office" ?

If my Word came from Dell with the computer then how can it be fake unless Dell is installing illegal software, furthermore I have no intention whatsoever of buying a so-called legal copy of Word, if Microsoft want to take action then I suggest that they contact Dell UK. Product ID is Word 2002 - number 54185-640-000025-17760. Is this a legal version - yes or no? simple answer.

  • Hello connie1049,

The "640" in the middle of the product ID indicates that this is a Volume Licensing installation.  This installation did NOT come from Dell, because Dell does not sell Volume Licensing copies of Microsoft software to individual consumers.  A license sold to an individual consumer would have "OEM" in place of the "640" in the product ID.

So based on the available information, the answer to "Is this a legal version - yes or no?" is No.

Regarding not being able to run the mgadiag download, IIRC some versions of Firefox do not allow the direct running of a downloaded executable.  You are supposed to save the file and run from the saved location.  You mentioned that the files download then disappear, which I have to assume means that you do not know where Firefox is saving the files.  You may find a solution to your issue here:  http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Unable+to+download+or+save+files

  • I bought this computer from Dell with the copy of Office already on it so you are wrong on that point and I have the receipt to prove it.
    Friday, June 11, 2010 11:54 AM
  • Hello connie1049,

It is entirely possible that you did purchase your Dell with an installation of Microsoft Office or an installation of Microsoft Works Suite 2006 with Word 2002 on it.  However, I can absolutely, positively tell you that (based on the product ID you posted), your Dell did not come from Dell directly to you with the particular installation of Word or Office that is on it now, because the one that is on it now is a nongenuine Volume Licensing edition.

Dell does sell computers to consumers with consumer-licensed software on them.  These installations would have product ID numbers with the letters "OEM" where the number "640" is on the product ID that you posted.

We have found that people in your situation, where they may once have had a Genuine copy of Office installed but now have a nongenuine copy installed, quite often had taken their computers to a shop for repairs (or maybe had a friend help them with reinstalling Windows) and the shop or the helpful friend were the ones that installed the wrong software.  Could that have been what happened to your computer?

Could you post back and type exactly the line item on the Dell receipt that describes Office?
