It says it's genuine but when I go to validate it on the website It tells me:

"This copy of Windows did not pass genuine validation"

My problems came up right when I was installing the latest update, the computer froze during the update and when I restarted it I got the red X with An Unauthorised Change was made to Windows and two options, Close or Learn More Online. Close just logs me off and Learn More Online brings me to Microsoft.com/genuine where my previously mentioned validation problem happens. I tried avast/deleting the update/ad-aware/several disk checks. I can only get to my desktop through safe mode. I'm clueless right now and after six hours of searching these forums and the internet it seems like the solution of choice is to reinstall vista but I have a pre-installed vista from Ibuypower.com and I really don't want to call them up and see if they have a restore factory settings or something of the likes.

  • Hi Tipsy,

Ok, I am not sure how to troubleshoot the problem with uninstalling that update, so I suggest creating a (no cost) WGA Support Request at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52029 and explain to them that your Vista is experiancing a Mod-Auth Tamper that the WGA Forum Manager has isolated the cause of the Tamper to a semi-failed install of KB933928 and that you need assistance in uninstalling that update.

If they need additional information, explain that what I believe has happened is that the update successfully updated the critical system file 'slc.dll' (build number: 6.0.6000.16509) but the update had a catastrophic failure before it was able to updated the System Catalog, with slc.dll's new signature hash. Since the file's signature doesn't match the one in the system catalog, Vista thinks that file slc.dll has been tampered and put Vista in a Mod-Auth tamper state.

We need to uninstall KB933928 so that file 'scl.dll' is rolled back to it's older version in which the system catalog already has a signature hash for. This should bring your Vista out of the Mod-Auth tamper state and back into a Genuine state. At that point you can reinstall the update and should have no problems. If support needs any additional information, they can contact Darin Smith thru internal Microsoft mail.

FYI: Update KB933928 is NOT bad, it just failed in a way that caused a bad side affect. This is a rare occurance, but can happen. We are currently working on ways to make this occurance even less likely, in the furture.

    Thank you,

    Darin Smith

  • Hi Tipsy,

Vista is in, what is called a 'Mod-Auth' Tamper state.  There are 2 types of Mod-Auth tampers.

    1) A critical system file was modified on disk - What this means is that the file, located on the hard drive, was modified in some way.

    2) A critical system file was modified in memory - What this means is the file itself (on the hard drive) is un-modified, but the code, from that file, running in the system, was modified in some way.

Because of the Mismatched files listed under the "File Scan Data-->" line of your Diagnostic Report, I beleive your issue is caused by: 1) A critical system file was modified on disk

Number 2 is usually caused by a running program that is incompatible with Vista.

Number 1 can be caused by a malicious program (spyware, malware, virus) or by manual file modification (by a user of the system). There is also a very small chance that an Update may fail in mid-update and cause this type of issue. As a safety mechanism, Updates are made so that if they fail, they roll back any updating that was done before the failure, but there is an off chance that the roll back did not occure.

So, what I would like to do is exclude a failed update as the cause of your issue. To do that, I would like you to uninstall/reinstall the update that correspond with mismatched critical system files seen in your Diagnostic Report under the "File Scan Data-->" line. (i.e. slc.dll[6.0.6000.16509]) by following the below steps:

    First, uninstall the updates:

    1) Log in to Vista in Safe Mode
    2) Click 'Start' then Click 'Control Panel'.

    3) Click 'Classic View' in the upper right of the Control Panel window.

    4) Double-Click the icon named 'Programs and Features'.

    5) Click the 'View installed updates' link in the upper right of the Program and Features window.

    6) It may take some time for the list of Updates to appear, please wait.

    7) Right-Click on the update 'KB933928' and select 'Unistall'.

    8) Reboot into Normal Mode

    Now, reinstall the updates:

(At this point, Vista may or may not be in reduced functionality, the below steps assume that Vista is in reduced functionality)

    9) Log in to Vista and select the options that brings up the Internet Browser.

    10) Go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads

    11) Search for KB933928

    12) In the search results, click the update that has "KB933928" in the name.

    13) Click the 'Download' button.

    14) You will be given the choice to Save or Run, select Run

    15) Reboot 2 times.

Please post back on if this does or does not resolve your issue.

    Thank you,

  • Thank you for the very helpfull response but the update (KB933928) has a problem right when I go to uninstall it I get:

"An error has occured. Not all of the updates were successfully uninstalled."

I went and tried to install the update just to see if it would work and it said "The update does not apply to your system." Likely because it wasn't removed. If it helps, while I was doing the KB933928 update from microsoft.com/downloads (that didn't work) I got:

"Optional update delivery is not working: You may be a victim of software counterfeiting."

Earlier today before I posted this I was checking the forum and I tried uninstalling the updates as you suggested just now but I uninstalled the two latest updates that had been installed the day my computer started having this problem. I didn't think of uninstalling this KB933928 because its dated as two months ago. I uninstalled the two updates and then that didnt work so I tried to uninstall the next latest updates but the:

"An error has occured. Not all of the updates were successfully uninstalled."

came up just as it is now.

Once again, thank you so much for the response and thanks in advance for any other help.

  • Well, I'm back. I've been trying to send an email to that support thing but everytime I try I get an Error.

    Error:
An unknown application error occurred. Please try again in a few minutes.

I've tried on my laptop, desktop and friends desktop and on both Internet Explorer and Mozilla. I've waited a few minutes and tried again then when that didnt work I waited a day and tried again but that didn't work. Is there some kind of special format I need to follow, is there a minimum amount of words I can use or something? Or is there just something wrong with the system?
