Issue activating Product Key (Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit) RRS feed

  • I recently had an issue with a laptop going completely corrupt, I made sure to grab the Win 7 Pro 64-bit Key from the original install; then I formatted the hard drive and reinstalled windows from an install disk.  This issue here, after setting everything up and getting it going (new install worked fine); it is now telling me the copy of windows is not genuine.  This is the same product key that was on the computer before the new install, no hardware changed, so I am confused why it does not want to take the product key?  Any ideas on this, I would greatly appreciate some help.

    tl;dr - Reinstalled Windows 7 64-bit on a laptop, wont take the old product key (same OS).

  • To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool

    (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )

     Once saved, run the tool.

    Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.

     To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.


    Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!
