How to enter product key on a dead page RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

When I start up the computer it goes through all the normal things then gets to where it should ask me to log on but instead it goes to a black page with "this version of windows is not genuine build 6001" and wont let me go any further. How do I enter my product key when it wont let me get past this page. Ive also tried starting in safe mode it does the exact same thing but it has safe mode in three of the corners of the black page

    Thank you

Ah! progress! - of a kind, anyway!
The black background is all you get in Safe Mode - specific Graphics
    drivers are not loaded.

Did you not get the Taskbar? - if not, then try the three-finger salute
(Ctrl+Alt+Del), and see if you get offered the Task Manager - if so take it,
and then click File, then New Task - enter EXPLORER into the box and click
OK - with any luck you'll get the taskbar back, and then proceed as above

Everything that I can find about build 6001 is that it is a evaluation copy of Vista that has expired and you won't be able to use it.  If someone else has further knowledge I am sure that they will post.

The only workaround that I see is to purchase a retail version of Vista or Win 7 (if your computer supports 7) or revert to the original OS that came with the computer which will require a full reinstall of the OS and all programs in all probability.

If otherwise, like the computer came with that version of the OS on it post back with the exact error message.

  • Im willing to try anything, but to be honest I have almost zero computer knowledge hence why I am in this situation because I didnt enter the product key the million times it asked me before (because of course I didnt know that it was on a stick underneath my laptop!)

So anything you can help me with would be greatly appreciated!

    Thank you so much!

please download and run the Genuine Diagnostics tool (MGADiag.exe) at this
    link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012. Click "Continue", click
the "Copy" button then “Paste” the report into a reply message in this
    thread.

If you do not have access to the Start Button:
    1) Login to Vista and click the option that brings up Internet Explorer.
    2) Type: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 into the browser
    address bar.
    3) A window will come up asking if you want to “Run” or “Save”, Select “Run”
    4) When the program runs, click the “Continue” button, then click the “Copy”
    button.
    5) Return to this thread
    http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/genuinevista/thread/170b8e42-698c-41fa-b80f-5f0e95e8c9fa.
    6) In a reply post, paste the Diagnostic Report.

Then we can see what's causing the problem, rather than speculating.

Hmm - will it start in Safe Mode?
To access Safe Mode, while the black/white POST screen is up during the
boot, start tapping the F8 key about twice a second, and you should be
offered the Advanced Boot Menu - one option is Safe Mode with Networking.
Take that option. Note that in the boot, you'll get a long list of
filenames, and it will seem to freeze - leave it for at least 15 minutes
before assuming that it has actually frozen!

If that works, then you'll be able to download the tool, at least, though I
think if it runs, it may not give all the details - but we can try! :)
See if it runs - then you should also be able to post it from that PC.

Noel, research error "build 6001".  Apparently this is an evaluation version that has expired, or at least that is all I have been able to find out about that code.  If you have other information that I am not privy to please post.

Build 6001 is the SP1 Build of Windows Vista. Build 6000 was RTM, Build 6002
    is SP2
Open a Command Prompt window - you'll see the legend
Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6002] if you have SP2 installed.

Thanks, I see what you mean.  Amazing that all that I can find on the internet about that error is related to the evaluation copy of Vista that came out.

Most of those problems were caused by people who'd had the Evaluation
version (which was build 6001 as well), and who'd 'forgotten' to get the
real thing - and then wondered why they were in Limited mode.
