Bug: Adding a file, via Live Deskop, to a folder that is not synced to Live Desktop produces unexpected results. RRS feed

  • General discussion

  •  Hi,
Think I've found a problem. Take a look at the screenshot here: http://cid-550f681dad532637.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Public/Misc/20080718-mesh|_folder|_problems-adding|_file|_to|_folder|_that|_is|_not|_synced|_to|_live|_desktop.JPG

This is showing a folder that is not synced to the Live Desktop. However, as we know, even though a folder is not synecd to Live Desktop the folder and its subfolders still show up in Live Desktop. I uploaded a file called "New text document.txt" (you can see it in the screenshot) to a folder called "Media" at 15:08:33. Notice some things here:
1)The "Media" folder  is not synced to live Desktop.
2)The file DOES appear in Live Desktop even though this folder is not synced to Live Desktop
3)The news feed thinks that I added lots of files (>1000) about 2 minutes later. I didn't do that. I promise :)

So...I'm not sure what the behaviour SHOULD be in this scenario (that scenario being I upload a file, using Live Desktop, into a folder that is not synced to Live Desktop) but what has happened here is definitely not predictable or intuitive - especially the newsfeed saying that I added loads of files. Not only is that not predictable or intuitive its just plain wrong.

Hope this is useful. Do you want me to raise a bug for it?

    cheers
    Jamie

  • I think that the bug part is the news with the >1000 files and I'd recommend filing it, Jamie.
If the folder is on the Live Desktop, I would imagine that it would be possible to put a file there, but it won't sync to any other devices as that folder is not being synchronized from/to the Live Desktop, but only via P2P.
Perhaps you should not be allowed to manually put a file in a folder on the Live Desktop when that folder is not being synchronized from any client to the Live Desktop...

    Hi Steve,
    Thanks for the reply.

The newsfeed thing is definitely a bug - agreed.

The other stuff is definitely a grey area. I don't think we should disallow loading stuff into a folder that is not synced to the cloud because that is a very real scenario that has a lot of benefits (e.g. I buy an mp3 from a digital retailer, and I want to drop it directly into my media library from digitalretailer.com).

Personally I think it would be nice if any file loaded into a folder that is not synced to the cloud gets pushed out to devices to where it IS synced, and then it disappears from the cloud. That would be my preference.

    What say others?

    cheers

  • Sounds like a viable option, but it opens up quite a few issues (like file conflicts, how long to leave the file on the Live Desktop if the synced devices aren't attached, etc.). Personally, I'd just treat it as a folder. Actually, quite honestly I'd personally revamp the UI so that non-synced drives didnt' appear on Live Desktop at all and instead make the UI for managing the synced drives accessible in a different way. I know it's a "Live Folder," but simply having a "Manage Live Folders" link on the desktop would suffice and reduce clutter from folders not based in the cloud. I'm imagining that the Live Desktop could become quite cluttered for power users once applications start making their way to the cloud.

  •  Hi Jamie,

As Stephen says, I definitely think you should file a bug on the news issue.  As for the other points, I think the discussion here is great (and hopefully others will chime in).  Once you decide how you think this scenario should work, though, I'd suggest adding it to the Wish List. :)

    Thanks,

    Ben.

Yeah I see what you're saying, however I think there is HUGE value in being able to access the folder structure, just not the files. For example, I purchase some digital content and I want to save that directly to a Mesh folder that isn't synced to the Live Desktop.
