Can't get my product key to take the place of the one in my machine RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have copied my diagnostic report below.  My Hard drive died and a friend of a co-worker of mine reinstalled the new hard drive I purchased.  Now I am geting the error can't update because your copy iof windows isn't genuine.  I followed the instruction on the page that comes up and says I am not genuine.  My friend called thre guy that worked on my machine, and he said he used an image? to fix my computer and that I just need to type in my own microsoft key to gret the updates from mircrosft.  I tried to type in my xp pro key and it says my keys don't match.  How can I make sure my license is being used, since it is genuine?

    goofy1,

Thank you for posting your diagnostic information. We are sorry to hear about the problem your currently experiencing. Diagnostic results help our team in determining the root cause of your issue. The Windows XP Professional product key installed on this computer was not assigned by Microsoft. The key is counterfeit and was most likely generated by a key generator. The product key found on your computer has been detected on multiple computers. Product keys are only allowed to be used on one computer unless otherwise specified in the end user licensing agreement (EULA).   You will find numerous sites where this key has been posted.  Use your favorite search engine and paste in the product key.  Below could be a possible scenario.

This is why you may be seeing the "Software Counterfeiting" messages on your computer. You will need to uninstall Windows XP Professional before any further complications occur from being non-genuine. As a customer there are several options available for you to get Genuine. For details on the ways to “Get Genuine”, see the web page that outlined your validation failure details or http://www.microsoft.com/genuine .  It will provide all of the possible steps which you can take. Also please review the Validation Advisor for further guidance at:

    https://www.microsoft.com/genuine/selfhelp/ValidationHelp.aspx

Please uninstall and reinstall a genuine copy of Windows XP and use your genuine product key to validate to resolve your issue.

Again, we are sorry to hear about your situation. Please be sure to backup or otherwise offload any data from the hard disk because a clean installation/reimaging will destroy all personal user data on the hard drive. Please don't hesitate re-posting if you need further assistance.

Based on your WGA Data Results

    Validation Status: Blocked VLK

The VLK is a Volume License Key that Microsoft issues to large corporations, educational institutions, etc. Some of the keys and CD's have been leaked and as a result Microsoft has blocked those keys from receiving updates. The 'image' that was used is likely an image of this type of CD and key.

What type of computer do you have? Is it a Dell, HP, Gateway, etc or is it custom built? If it is manufacturer built you may request a re-installation disc from the manufacturer this more than likely will be an XP OEM re-installation disc (XP installation) if it is Dell or it will be a 'recovery' disc (XP plus all those extra programs and drivers) if it is another brand.

Please reply back and let other forum members know if this clears up your issue.
