Can't Get this Darned Thing To Work!!!! RRS feed

  • Question

  • I just installed Live OneCare from the box and I keep getting errors saying that I need a Live subscription.  I trief following the instructions in the book and never got the chance to use my product key.  I signed up for a Live subscription and paid $50 more and still am unable to synch my system.

I also checked the FAQs and did all of the other things it said to do like change the security and cookies settings.

    Can someone help?????

  • Mike, I received confirmation that there was a server problem on the Microsoft side when you initially tried to activate on 5/28-5/29. If you are still unable to activate, please try a reinstall of OneCare or contact support (or me) per the above instructions.

  • If you have not yet entered the product key, open One Care, select "Subscribe", follow the prompts and when you reach the payment page select "Pre-Paid PIN" as the payment method and enter the 25 digit product key included in the retail package. If you purchased One Care online, open One Care, select "Subscribe" and when prompted for a Live ID, use the Live ID and password used to purchase your subscription. When you enter the correct  Live ID your subscription will be recognized and One care will activate.

  • Mike,

Since you have a retail key and have now also paid for a subscription, you may wish to contact support to cancel the subscription created with your credit card, so that you can use your key.

What *exactly* is happening when you go through the activation process? Apparently, you are able to log in and subscribe with a credit card (you should have also seen an option at login to activate with a product key), however, it seems that the activation process is not returning the credentials to the installed copy of OneCare.

When you activate OneCare to start your subscription, it first requires you to sign in with a LiveID and then provides the opportunity to enter a retail key or purchase online. Once you've completed the entry and submission of the key and payment information, your subscription is created and the subscription credentials are downloaded back to your copy of OneCare. These credentials are refreshed periodically, too. If something is blocking the receipt of the credentials, activation is not complete and your PC will remain in trial mode. Make sure that there are no other security programs running, including Parental Controls, which should be disabled at activation. Other security programs - firewalls, real time spyware protection and anti-virus need to be completely removed in order to use OneCare.

If your subscription to OneCare shows as still trial mode after purchase and activation in OneCare

    • Verify that you have a clear Internet connection - no other security programs running.
    • Check your PC date and time.
    • Check your subscription status by logging in with your subscription LiveID at http://billing.microsoft.com
    • Confirm that this is the same LiveID shown to be the Subscription ID in OneCare - Help/About...

If your subscription is correctly shown at the Billing site, but incorrect in OneCare and your PC date and time are correct, please contact support.

  • I am unable, and have been unable to see anything related to product key, nor do I see anything for "Subscribe".  I am unfamiliar with the Vista screens and can't figure out how to start anything...  can you sense the frustration?

I've done those things and when I open OneCare I only get warnings that I need to complete my install.  When I go to do that, I keep getting the same screens asking me to get a LiveID.

Isn't there someone I can talk to LIVE????

  • Mike,

Send me an email at sboots@mvps.org with a subject line including "OneCare" (to get past my spam filtering) and in the message body, tell me what country you are in, your forum nickname, and paste this link http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsOneCare/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=3420487&SiteID=2 in the message body.

I am not online 24x7, so you may be waiting for a reply, but I'll do my best to hook you up with support.
