WHS and Dell Poweredge 2400 server RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • I was searching the FAQ to see if WHS would work on my Poweredge server running Windows Server 2000. According to the specs, it is too slow as it needs at least a 1.0 speed. Mine runs at 866 and is a single processor. But in response to the question about booting - the CD on my Poweredge will boot from a DVD even though it says only CD on it. I added a PCI IDE card and then was able to add a large hard drive. It was not easy - it tried to boot from the IDE drive even though I told it to boot from the SCSI. All is well now, I'm just waiting to see if WHS will work on my system before buying it.

  • I built an old 750MHz AMD slot A for the first server which ran fine until I re-purposed my HTPC to become the server for WHS. It will work but you may not be happy with the performance of trying to watch videos and transfer files at the same time YMMV.

  • You can buy better second hand hardware for less than $100.  Is it really worth installing WHS on something that old and inefficient?
