This copy of windows is not genunine. RRS feed

  • Question

  • My laptop crashed so put in the support software for the machine which puts the new copy by the side of the old copy.  Since then I have deleted the old copy of Vista.

It has been coming up with the comment that the copy of windows is not genunine in the bottom right corner, and telling me that Windows Aero is not working, but when clicking on the link and validating Vista it accepts the validation, and has downloaded all of the updates.  I thought that it may have corrected itself after loading up the updates but it is still there.  I have just used the GA diagnostic tool and it is saying that the copy is invalid.  Please see all the info below.

    Thanks for helping

  • Hello lisaC1973,

Changing the Product Key would have been the first thing I would have suggested.  However, after being Non-Genuine, it can sometimes take up to two reboots for Vista's systems to reset back to a Genuine state.  So first, try rebooting two times and see if that resets everything.

If rebooting doesn't resolve the problem, try the below steps.

    1) Open an Internet Browser window.
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
    3) Find the file CMD.exe
    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
    5) Type: net stop slsvc  (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    9) Type: net start slsvc
    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
    11) Restart your computer twice.
    12) You may be required to enter the Product Key and/or Activate. (be sure to use the the key from the sticker on the side or bottom of the computer and re-activate using the 'By Phone' method ).

    Thank you,

  • I have just repeated it after putting in the windows activation numbers on the bottom of the laptop and the Diagnostic report states that it is still invalid despite the fact that all of the windows activation and validations are accepted! Why?

  • Hi Darin,

    Thanks for your help.

I called the Microsoft helpline on Monday as I had a day off, and we ended up taking off the product key completely.  We then put the OEM code on the base of the computer back on, and it accepted it straight away (it did take 1hr 30 mins to get to that point though).
