"Not enough free space on some hard drives" error I don't understand RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a 20 Gb drive on which the Server software is installed.
The second disk is a Maxtor 1TB which the server install has partitioned into two.

Whilst I have installed 160Gb of videos in the Shared folders, which reside on D:.
The posted free space available on D: is 270Gb and on E: 267Gb

I cannot understand why the server is reporting such an error as this.

I reduced the monthly backup retention from 3 to 2 months and ran CleanUp Now, but the problem is still being flagged.

    Please can anyone guide me?

    Thanks
    Nigel
P.S. Is there a connector version available yet for Vista 64bit?

  • Hi Nigel,
the shared folders reside on D:, but their content is not necessary stored there. The question is - how did you copy the files? Did you use the network shares or did you copy directly to D:\shares on the server? If the last is the case, you messed up with the WHS mechanics, since you never should write directly to the managed file system.
If you did so, remove the files from there and put them onto the server by using the shortcut Shared folders on server (and do not use the same target folder, if you cut/paste directly).
    What is drive E:?
In WHS itself are only two drive letters visible for harddisks, which are in the storage pool only D:, for the system volume C:.

  • Nigel,

The 64-bit connector has been available for some time now. If you have installed all appropriate WHS updates, then the connector software will be available in the Shared Folders-Software-Home Server Connector Software folder.

Your setup doesn't sound correct., there should only ever be a C: and D: partition ever seen, no matter how many actual drives you have installed in the server. On installation of any other drives, either at new, or later, these extra drives are added under a Mount Point on your C: partition which can be recognised as C:/fs/(x).
The only time there will ever be another drive letter is if you intentionally add another drive to be used as a server Backup drive, which will not then be part of the storage pool.

So, after saying all that, what does the actual error message say and is there anything shown in the server logs? Also, if you RDP into your server, how much free space is there available on your C: partition?

  • 64 bit

If you have auto updates turned on you should be good to go.  Just run setup.exe from the software>homeserver conector share

    Still.....

  • (I posted this 3 days ago but it is no longer on the board!)

I am getting this error showing now after using WHS for 2 months.

I am puzzeled why, as nothing has changed.

WHS installed itself on the C: drive 20Gb and partioned the second drive 1Tb  to D: and E:
Currently there is around 270Gb free on each of D: and E:

I have even reduced the retention on monthly backups from 3 to 2 andstill the error perisists.

    Please advise

    Thanks

  • I have merged this with the previous thread on this topic. You can always find your threads by clicking on your own name, then clicking on (in this case) "nandrews's threads" on the right.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
